Pros: Very courteous; Penske cares about its customers; has liftgate
This past year we moved an hour south of us and needed a large rental truck with a lift gate. Only Budget and Penske offers the trucks with a lift gate and it became a bidding war with Penske winning our business by far. I have always learned to call the dealer directly and skip the 800 reservations line since they know nothing of what the dealer has or is expecting and too many hassles develop that way with a he said, she said scenario.
What We Got
I was certainly not disappointed when we arrived to find a new clean commercial 26' size truck with lift gate awaiting our arrival. This truck was huge and we were warned to watch out for overpasses and we were told what routes to stay on, as people have not cleared the top in this size of truck. You simply stay on the routes that you have known the semi-trucks to take.
Penske told us while checking out "we have been told if we don't take care of our customers someone else will". I like this attitude and more businesses should adopt the "we care about our customers" attitude.
The truck was classified as medium duty with no commercial driver's license required and was equipped with auto transmission, stereo, air conditioning, power steering and air brakes. The gross tonnage was 26,000.
The agent walked with us around the truck showing us how to work everything as well as which way to take for the easiest route home. Very helpful and courteous.
The truck was clean and not smelly and had cargo tie straps along the inside of the sides. It came with an appliance dolly in which we did not have to pay extra for.
You do need to find out from your insurance company if you are covered for the vehicle as far as liability and collision is concerned. Even though we have full coverage on our vehicles our insurance does not cover a truck of that tonnage. They covered rental cars but not rental trucks for collision so we did take out the extra coverage and surprisingly with Penske they were very reasonable with the amount charged.
Our home was a 3 bedroom 3 bath home with several desks several large TV's and a 3-car garage. We could not have used anything smaller and we filled this to the max.
We had the truck for 2 days and after completion we filled it up with diesel and returned it after hours to the attendant in charge. Very easy to rent and drop off.
When you were using the lift gate you needed to keep the truck running since it will run the truck's battery down fast using it constantly to move your items.
The lift gate is wonderful to have instead of the ramp as it really saves your back from having to walk the steep plank with your heavy items. No personal items were damaged in the move and the ride was smooth.
The total to have the truck for 2 days with 160 miles with insurance came to be $88.00 with tax. The diesel at that time is when all gas was at the highest prices as we paid over $4.00 a gallon for diesel and it cost us $85.00. All in all, $173 is certainly nothing to complain about.
I would definitely use Penske again for our next moving which I hope is not anytime soon and highly recommend it to everyone else.
