Wow! Did you ever want to know what it is to drive a really big truck? The new GMC 26 foot Uhaul truck was wonderful for moving half way across the country. The best part was that the truck had extra handling features which made driving easy. When going down a hill or mountain the truck actually automatically slowed down with no need to use the breaks at all. Climbing mountains was a breeze with more than enough power. The load on relatively smooth roads does not move or shift inside the truck because of an automatic load stabilizer. Our load did move a little when going over an extremely bad section of road on I-84 in Eastern New York State which was no fault of the truck. The seats in the cab were extremely comfortable and there were drink holders and lots of leg room on the passenger side.

I must mention that you DO need to take all curves at or below the suggested speed for the curve at 40 miles per hour or below or you will topple this very large truck. Drive slower than slow on ALL curves. Uhaul does not give you a test to see if you know how to drive a truck. It is an automatic shift, but very large trucks need to be driven SLOW. I was luck to have my husband behind the wheel and he had some professional truck driving experience. The truck is long and very tall, which means you will need extra care and difficulty in gas stations and passing on the highway is more of a challenge. We also had to remove limbs trees in our yard to be able to pull the truck into our driveway.
Uhaul was friendly and accommodated us on our request to use the truck one extra day. The whole experience was pleasant and easy, except the part where we had to load all our own stuff on the truck. We were happy to do our own moving to save some money. The cost was about $2000 plus gas, whereas hiring a moving company was quoted to us at $4000. Our total expenses to fly out there, stay in motels and truck rental was about $3000, which was a savings to us of about $1000, and we had the benefit of going through our things and decided which we wanted to move and which to leave behind, as we could only afford to move half of our 5 storages this time, saving the other half for our move to a vacation home at some later point in time.
Thumbs Up on the 26 foot UHAUL truck. We wanted to keep it and were sad to have to return it which we did on time. Uhaul has recently purchased 800 of these fabulous trucks, so they are available for you to rent. Wishing you luck on your move.
