Although my experience with U-Haul happened many years ago, it has stayed with me, it was so awful. I would NEVER recommend U-Haul to anyone, and if I could give it less than one star, I would.
I rented a 12-foot truck in Anaheim, California to move to Reno, Nevada. U-Haul had the best prices, and it was close to my office, so I chose them. I always thought U-Haul had a good reputation, too. Was I wrong!
When I first started to drive the truck, I noticed that 1st gear didn't work. I went back in to the office, and told the guy at the counter. He told me that was normal in trucks. Now, I know many of you are laughing, but I was a young, naive girl, and I believed him. I got back in the truck, and drove away, not using 1st gear. I'm sure they're still laughing at the U-Haul store. Ok, so I was stupid, but they outright lied to me, and sent me off on a 500 mile journey in a malfunctioning vehicle.
The truck was advertised as "fuel efficient." It wasn't. It got about 5-6 miles a gallon, and I had to stop numerous times to fill it up, as the gas tank wasn't that large. It was also slower than molasses, it wouldn't go over 50 miles per hour, my estimate, as the speedometer began wavering wildly after 50MPH, and you couldn't possible tell how fast you were going. My normal trip to Reno took about 9 to 10 hours from Anaheim. This trip took from 5:00 am in the morning until 10:00 pm at night! I took the flattest route possible, to avoid mountains, but it didn't help this gutless wonder of a truck.
After I got on the road, I discovered many other problems with the truck. The emergency brake stopped working, it wouldn't hold. When I ran into a thunder storm over Donner Pass, I discovered the windshield wipers only worked on one speed, and I could barely see where I was going. To change lanes, I had to put on my signal to notify the car that was following me to Reno, and they would move over, then I could move over, because I couldn't see. It was a very unsafe situation.
When I returned this truck from Hell, I demanded a refund of at least a portion of my rental fee, as the truck malfunctioned, and was unsafe. Of course, the receiving rental agency wouldn't do anything, they hadn't gotten the money, they certainly wouldn't refund any. I wrote to the office in Anaheim, and also wrote a letter to the president of the company about my experience, the lies of the office in Anaheim, and the dangerous truck I was rented. I never even received the courtesy of a reply.
Clearly U-Haul's affiliates and the corporate office could care less about the people that rent their trucks, or their safety. Their trucks are dangerous and unsafe, and their representatives and liars and cheats. DO NOT use U-Haul under any circumstances. You're taking your life in your hands to save a few dollars.
