My employer moved me across the country for a new job, and they hired Ballard Moving & Storage, a United Van Line affiliate, to move all my things. I'd never moved *this* way before - I'd usually done the I'll-buy-you-beer plan and recruited friends. But I'll be damned if I ever lift another finger to move again - United Van Lines made it such a pleasant, worthwhile experience, and I'm a born-again princess who refuses to lift a finger towards U-Haul.
A few days before the move, a rep arrived to assess my valuables and see what would be involved. On the day of the move, the packing crew arrived on time, and packed everything carefully in paper and bubblewrap. (Including a box of corn flakes, and a can of pineapple, which I'd forgotten to throw away.) They were done in less than 5 hours. My 10-year old car was also being moved, and I secretly wished it would be damaged in the move so I could get a new one - but no, it arrived in perfect shape.
My heavily sedated cat and I flew to Minnesota, where my things awaited me in storage. When I finally found a place to move into, the moving team arrived on time, and moved everything into my apartment in record speed. I unpacked over a few days, and United even came to pick up the boxes. My vacuum cleaner was slightly damaged, but aside from that, everything was in great shape. My most highly-prized valuables were my prints and various pieces of art, and they all arrived in excellent condition. The movers were well-informed and well-prepared with all the necessary paperwork for the move.
And all I had to do was stand around. I think I may have gone out for a burger.
