When we bought our house a year ago, we needed to buy a new refrigerator. As we had so many other things we needed to buy also, we were looking for a really economical model that we felt we could rely on also. After shopping around, we decided the hotpoints were the best deals. We also found that they actually were made by GE, so felt it was a name we could trust. As we needed it ASAP, we brought it home ourselves. The worst part was getting it in the house. We ended up having to take it out of the box first, as it would not fit in any door still in the box. Once we got it in, it was really easy to install. We just plugged it in, and away we went.
Handles and Door
You have to screw the handles in. They are very unobtrusive handles that are right on the front. One of the features this refrigerator has is that you are able to reverse the doors to open either on the left or right. We kept them to open from the left, but the instructions seemed simple enough if you choose to do this. The inside of the door comes with 3 metal shelves that you have to also attach. They are deep enough to hold a 1/2 gallon of milk, but not a gallon. There is also a butter holder on the door, but not an egg holder. The outside is made of a smudge-proof plastic, so that you do not see the fingerprints. This is really great, as I have very infrequently have to clean it.
Shelves
There are several features about the shelves that I really like. First of all, they are adjustable. You can position them where you want easily by just hanging them into the brackets along the back of the fridge. You also have the option of splitting your shelves so that they do not stretch all the way across. This has really been a feature that I like. I can have short and tall shelves. The final thing I like about the shelves is that they have a spill proof lip. If you spill anything, it will not drip down to the next shelf. That makes it great for clean-ups.
Drawers
This refrigerator comes with 3 drawers. 2 at the bottom for your produce, and a smaller one that attaches to the bottom of another shelf for meats, cheeses, etc. The produce drawer is 10" deep and the other is only 6" deep. One thing I really like about them is that they are clear. You can see into them through the shelf they are under and through the front of them. Things still get buried, but it's nice to see what is in there and how it is doing.
Freezer
The freezer is my only complaint. It basically is large enough to barely handle our needs, but I would have liked a little more space. It comes with a plastic coated shelf to divide it in half. It also has 2 shelves on the door that you again have to attach. I use those mainly for vegetables and etc. It is really frost free, so you can easily just wipe it clean. We did get the optional ice maker, so that does take up a little room on the left. But it is nice to have ice without worrying about making it.
Temperature Controls and Energy Guide
There are 2 controls on the back of the refrigerator that controls temperature. The control for the refrigerator section is a dial for 1-9. I generally keep it right in the middle, on 5. The freezer has letters from A-E, A being the warmest and E the coldest. I generally keep it set on C. The refrigerator uses 745 kWh/year, which is pretty high. The high according to them is 767 and the low is 559. They estimate that the yearly cost is $63, so I did not think that was too bad.
Noise
The noise level generally is really low. I barely notice it running. The only thing I can really hear is the ice maker. It drops the ice and occasionally just makes clunk noises that I guess are normal for the ice maker.
Overall, I would recommend this refrigerator if you are looking for a good running, dependable, inexpensive refrigerator. For us, it is a great starter refrigerator. Maybe someday, we will be able to afford a fancier one with more room. But until then, this one is doing us just fine.
