| Rosethyme's Full Review: KitchenAid Superba 20.4 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrig... |
Earlier this year my refrigerator suddenly died--it stopped working and all my food started to defrost. The repair man said it wasn’t worth repairing, since it was already almost 17 years old. For a replacement I purchased a Kitchen Aid refrigerator, model # KTRP19KGWH01, manufactured in June, 1999.
I did not want an extra large model. I wanted something white and reasonably sized that would fit into my modest kitchen. It was a floor model and I could get next day delivery on it, so I bought it. The purchase price was about $800.00, including the delivery.
There are several small features about this appliance that I really like. There is a middle shelf in the freezer section, so frozen foods can be packed or removed easily. They also freeze better and faster with a layer of air between them rather than having all stacked one atop another.
What I especially like about the freezer is the small attached shelf for the ice cube trays. It is attached to the ceiling in the upper left corner of the freezer. I fill my ice cube trays and place them on these special shelves and they NEVER spill or tilt. This is great: no balancing or moving items to make a level space for the ice cubes. This is space I seldom use anyway. I do not fill my freezer all the way up to the very top. It normally would have been wasted space. Very nice.
In the main section of the refrigerator there are 2 different sized crisper drawers, each with it’s own humidity controller. The “roller tracks plus” rollers allow for a smooth and easy in and out movement of the drawers. There is also one on the meat locker drawer, and they all work well. The clear glass shelves are adjustable, and if not full, allow the contents of the shelf below to be viewed.
The door has several adjustable shelves, so they can be fitted to whatever size bottle you want to store in the door. They are also wider than the standard door shelves. I can set one that will fit a gallon of milk perfectly. This still leaves me with enough height below to store my open wine bottles upright. There is also a generous sized butter compartment and a can rack in the door. The can rack is a zigzag style plastic shelf that will hold 6 cans on their sides. Easy access, so no more hunting around in the back of the refrigerator for cans.
The unit is well sealed and easy to clean. The drawback is it is not quite as energy efficient as I would like, but it is not bad. I have had the unit for about 8 months now, and everything still works smoothly. I like this model and have been very pleased with my purchase.
