The day my faithful old refrigerator broke down, was the beginning of my nightmare.
My Story
Like most mornings I woke up, went down stairs to get a cup of jump start (coffee). Now, I’m one of those people that like milk in their coffee, so I opened the refrigerator door and I didn’t get that cool breeze like I usually do when I open the door and you could smell that some food was starting to go bad. I took out the milk and it was nearly warm and already smelled funny.
Well, now what do I do? Go to Home Depot is what I did.
Home Depot
The sales person (Tom) was very friendly. I was so amazed at how helpful he was. He gave me complete attention and answered all of my questions. I could not believe how wonderful they were.
After deciding on my Maytag side by side, Tom explained that they didn’t have any in stock and we would have to have what they call Depot Direct. Depot Direct is a delivery agency that Home Depot uses. That agency goes to the warehouse for GE or Maytag picks up your appliance and then delivers it to you. Depot Direct is not the same as the delivery that Home Depot does for all the other stuff in the store. That delivery is from the Home Depot store.
Well, I needed a refrigerator NOW and I wanted them to take out the old one while they were there. Not to mention that I also wanted them to hook up the water for the ice maker. I was getting a little worried.
I couldn’t believe what he told me, he said “we’ll give you a loner until yours comes in”. Well, that was the answer for me.
I was pretty happy when I left the store. I got the side by side I have always wanted for $1098.00. They were going to haul it away for only $15.00 and install the ice maker for $30.00. Now, all I had to do was go home and wait those 3 days until my new refrigerator would arrive.
The big day
I got the call at about 9:00 am from the delivery agent. They would be at my house between 10:00 and 1:00. Not bad I thought. At about 10:20 they showed up. They installed the refrigerator and took away the old one. I was shocked to see how long it took them. They didn’t leave until after 1:00. Shortly after they left I went down to the basement to do some laundry. I couldn’t believe what I saw, my ceiling was raining! I ran upstairs; sure enough the kitchen floor was flooded!! At least a quarter of an inch of water!! I called the delivery agent and told them what was going on. The installers/delivery guys came back and put some plumbers dope on the valve and said that it was fixed. Well, the kitchen flooded again!! This time they told me that they were done and they were NOT going to try again. I would have to call Home Depot.
I went to Home Depot the next day. They said that they were not responsible!! Could you believe this? Well, I did get to talk to the department supervisor for the appliance area. He called Maytag and Maytag said that they would not help, come out or have anything to do with it. They said that they have a contract with GE to do their installs and Home Depot would have to take care of it. Well, I am about ready to cry now. I asked them if they could come and get the refrigerator. No, that would be MY responsibility! I asked if a Maytag guy could fix it. Well, they called a local Maytag guy and they said that they DO NOT make appointments; they will stop by IF they are in the area!! OK, now I really wanted to cry.
It has been 2 weeks since they dropped off the refrigerator and I still have got no help. I might have to rent a truck and take the refrigerator back up to Home Depot myself, but then the appliance sales man said that Home Depot does not return appliances. I just don’t know what to do!!
I finally did get to speak to the Maytag people. Well, I must admit I thought that Home Depot was giving me the run around. Here it is Maytag that is giving the run around. First they put me on hold. Then they wanted my serial number, model number, the date it was delivered, the names of the people that delivered it, the name of the agency that delivered it, the names of the people that installed it. I asked…Why would I get the names of the delivery guys, the installer or the delivery company? Aren’t they contracted with Home Depot and Maytag? They said, without this information I cannot help you. Well, I did get the serial number and model number from my refrigerator. Then, I called Home Depot and they got me the rest of the information. I called Maytag back with the information in hand. Now, the lady said, “Well, your food is cold, isn’t it?” I said “Yes, but the ice maker is leaking all over the floor” and she said, “BUT, your food is cold. Correct”. So, you can see I was getting no where. I hung up the phone and called the Home Depot complaint phone number.
The Refrigerator
I have the Maytag 25 cubic foot MSD2556. One of the features that I liked the most was the Dual cool. Tom explained to me that the dual cool is unlike the other refrigerators. Say you open the refrigerator side; you let out some of the cool air, right. Well, in most refrigerators the cooling system will let cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator side. With the dual cool you don’t have that happen. Some how Maytag has the dual cool, cool each side separately. I thought that was pretty neat.
The refrigerator side has 3 adjustable, spill proof shelves. This means that if you did spill a can of pop on the shelf the liquid would not spill over that shelf. This is a nice perk for a family with three kids.
On the side door there are four adjustable shelves and two permanent shelves. The shelves are a very nice size. Large enough to hold 2 gallons of milk or pop or anything else you want. It comes with two slides that you can attach to two of the shelves for condiments. There is a butter keeper area at the top.
There is a nice little bonus, a wine holder. You just slide it onto one of the shelves so that the wine would be under that shelf. I like this addition. It keeps the wine out of the way.
There are three cabinets at the bottom of the refrigerator.
Snack center, with an adjustable slide for fruits or vegetables. We eat a lot of fruits so we keep apples in this one.
Fresh produce, usually we have oranges in here, but with the weather getting a little cooler I will be keeping the onions, celery and carrots in here soon.
Adjusti-Temp, this one is at the bottom. There is a slide that you can adjust COLD/COOL. We keep this in the middle and keep our daughter’s huggies (drinks) in this shelf.
At the top right hand side of the refrigerator is the water filter. It is very easy to put in. All you do is twist out the plug and twist in the filter. I keep the plug in the butter dish. You never know if you need to change that filter and not have one. It is better to remove the old filter and put the plug back in until you can replace it.
Because of the ice maker the freezer is not real big, but large enough. There are four side shelves that can each hold four packs of hot dogs or 2 cans of frozen juice cans.
There are three shelves in the freezer and at the bottom is a basket that you can pull out. The basket makes a very nice feature.
Since my ice maker does not work, I really can’t tell you how well or bad that is, but I can tell you that you can put a tall (12 oz size) glass into the well easily. It is supposed to have ice cubes or crushed ice come out and it does have a lock and a light. If Maytag ever fixes this I will up-date this review and let you know how it works.
The Warranty
Maytag offers a one year complete warranty that includes parts, labor, everything. (I find this amusing since they are refusing to help me).
Maytag offers an additional four years on the parts, but not the labor.
You can purchase an extended service plan for $69.88 which gives you an additional four years. So you would get five years parts and labor and nine years on the parts. I was told that in addition if I did not like the performance of my refrigerator during that time and they could not correct the problem that Maytag would replace the appliance for free. Well, I haven’t seen that happen. So I am going to go and get my money back on that extended service plan.
All in all
If I would have known how Maytag operated I would have never purchased this product!!
I am just so upset that Maytag is not helping at all. I cannot believe that I have had this since the 13th of September and it is still not fixed. Any time I try to talk to a Maytag representative they treat me like I’m an idiot. During one phone call the Maytag lady said “well, it’s keeping your food cold. What’s the problem?” I said that the ice maker does not work. Her reply was, “but your food is cold, correct.”
I thought that a company as well known as Maytag would stand behind their product.
I would not recommend anyone to purchase any type of Maytag product after what I have been going through.
