| Barbarajo's Full Review: Oster 4704 7-Cup Rice Cooker |
To begin with, I love rice. I am an admitted carb junkie and when rice is on my plate, my fork heads right in that direction bypassing the best cuts of meats and freshest of vegetables.
I was married to an Hispanic man for 25 years, not including our 4 year courtship prior to marriage.
I am currently a caterer and offer a wide-variety of ethnic rice dishes. That is why a rice cooker has become an important piece of equipment for me, both in my professional kitchen and when cooking for my family.
I mention these three facts to solidify my conviction that I consider myself somewhat expert on rice making.
The first time that I used my cooker was to make a boxed Paella Rice put out by Goya. It came out excellent. Many might complain about the rice that sticks to the bottom, but I find this the most delicious part! There is a name for this in Spanish but since I have no idea of how to spell it, I will leave it out.
Since my first experience, I have made all kinds of rice including, Basmati, Jasmine, Short and long grains, white and brown - to name a few. I have used recipes included in the Oster booklet, boxed as I have mentioned, original ones and even recipes from my ex-mother-in-law who is of Cuban ancestry. I recently convinced her to purchase one and she is thrilled with it.
I am stealing a quote from an infomercial. You know the one with the Rotisserie? "Just set it and forget it."
(Incidentally, that will be my next review)
When loading the rice and other ingredients, it is important that the appliance is unplugged. Generally, one cup of rice makes about 2 cooked cups so it is equally as important to note the limitations of the appliance that you have. There are 7, 10 and 12 cup rice cookers. For those with a large family, or if you are a caterer, you may want to consider a larger sized cooker. I have the 7 cup and have to make rice in batches for my catered parties. I am considering buying a couple of larger capacity cookers.
The appliance consists of a Lid, a Heating Body, a Cook Light (Red when in use), a Power Cord, a Rice Cooking Switch Button, a Warm Light (Yellow), a measuring cup, Ladle, Handle and inner pot.
I recommend using the measuring cup included because it insures proper measurements of liquid resulting in perfect rice.
It is of utmost importance to NEVER operate the appliance uncovered and do not open it when it is in progress. In fact, because of the steam generated during usage, it is necessary to uncover it with great precaution. Do not try to smell it while uncovering. Keep your face away!
The cooker will automatically turn off when it is finished cooking and it will keep the rice warm between 140 and 175 degrees Farenheit. If the rice temperature goes lower, the red light will go back on indicating that the heat preservation process has begun again. You may want to remove the rice since this may cause it to become mushy.
The inner pot must sit directly on top of the warming plate in the heating body.
Only plug the cord in once all of the ingredients have been loaded and then proceed to put the switch on.
It is a very easy process and again, totally convenient.
The instruction manual provides precise instructions, care, many worthwhile recipes and a one year limited warranty.
Try the Chicken Breast in White Sauce recipe. Guaranteed a snap and delicious!
I highly recommend this product for anyone who even occasionally makes rice.
