| glacier's Full Review: Sanyo Rice Cooker and Steamer EC-232 Slow Cooker |
My family loves rice. We eat it every day in some fashion or another. From persian dishes (addas polo) to latin dishes (paella), we have it at least every day for dinner. We prompt small familial revolts when we're out.
This rice cooker is a dream. Put in the rice (usually two cups), the water (equal measure), a little oil (to create a crusty bottom, called 'tadik' for you persian food lovers), and a wee bit of salt. Close the lid, set it to 'cook' and forget about it.
This nifty, yet extremely simple cooker automatically switches to 'keep' after its done cooking. I let it set on keep for about 10 extra minutes because we like our rice a little bit drier that most.
I'm telling you, this rice cooker is a lifesaver if you have other things to cook because it is 'no maintenance'. We don't ever have to check the rice to see if it's going well.
Our cooker has an eight cup capacity, but we seldom make that much rice. Four cups is plenty for our family of four. Larger families should consider larger models.
The unit consists of the cooker with its element, in which the rice pot is placed to cook. There is some weight mechanism in the base of the cooker which somehow figures when and why to switch between 'cook' and 'keep'. The pot is removable for cleaning, obviously, with a lid. They provide measure delineations on the interior, which we never use.
The cord is detatchable, which is nice. After we cook with it, we place the rice pot on the table, wrap up the cord and place it in the cooker and back on the shelf. I'd recommend waiting a few minutes to prevent melting the cord.
As far as kitchen appliances go, this is by far our best and most often used investment. I couldn't function without it. We've had ours for five years; it is bruised and tattered and we love it. The pot has become deformed a bit with time and is no longer true, but the rice is still excellent.
I'm sure I'll be buying another one in a few years, until then it'll keep steaming along.
