There is a family picture of my family when I was a little girl. My three sisters and myself are wearing these beautiful, identical, lilac dresses. Complete with ruffles, and little, tiny flowers, Adorable collars, and my mom and aunt made them all. (I must insert here that I imagine that youngest sister probably got COMPLETELY sick of this dress because just as soon as she grew out of own along came another. Yes, I think that Bekah probably thought that this dress was like a magic dress that grew with her.)
Nearly all the women in my family sew; my mom, my aunt, my sisters, my.. (Oh, I am sorry, you only have so long to read this opinion. I will spare you the close 100 odd people in my family that sews) Still when I had sewing in home-ec it bored me to tears. I really felt like I stunk at it. I hated sewing! Having kids of your own and desiring to sew your little girl, little dresses for herself and dolls really changes your mind about that.
My mom had a machine that used to be my grandma's. It was old but it had barely been used. (She's like one of the only women in my family that didn't sew.) So mom gave it to me. I had it cleaned and started teaching myself to sew. I found it was a lot easier to sew without your home-ec teacher staring down at you critiquing everything you did.
The machine only lasted so long because I sewed it to death. So my husband agreed to buy me a new machine. Since I still wasn't that most experienced seamstress in the world it was a little hard to know what I needed in a machine.
I knew the following musts for my new machine;
1. I had noticed that my mom's machine really just danced all over the table as she sewed. I knew that I just couldn't handle that because I was just learning to sew as it was. I didn't need to be chasing my machine around while trying to sew.
2. I had to have a one step button hole because, hey, I can barely sew a buttonhole as it is!
3. Had to have zigzag stitch, which just makes things so much easier.
4. Had to have all the attachments come with the machine.
5. Had to have the backward stitch.
6. Had to be simple to use, sewing was new enough, I had no use for difficult machines.
So I went shopping. I checked Sears, and Jo Ann's. In my shopping I learned only the larger Jo Ann's carried sewing machines. I finally found a little Viking store, just about ready to close. The saleslady was so nice. I told her what I wanted, what I intended to sew with my machine, and how much I could spend. I had come in at just the right time. She had five of these machines that had just come in that very day. She was going to sell them at a special Christmas price, she said that the machine would normally be sold for $500 but as a Christmas special she was going to sell these five machines for $199. The price her beat Wal Mart and Sears so bad. At Wal Mart you can find a $200 machine but it is a $200. The same thing goes for Sears.
So I went home that day with a new machine. It had all the features I needed and more. It also sews some pretty embroidery stitches and stuff like that. It has a blind hemstitch, and comes with a covering. It sits still on the table as I sew, it has a handle and is lightweight for carrying, and it sews really nice and smoothly. It also came with four bobbins, a little screwdriver, and it's own little bottle of machine oil. It is very easy to clean and oil. The book has great instructions that are very informative and easy to understand.
Everyone in my family received lots of little home-sewed goodies for Christmas. I am still sewing with it. In fact I am in the process of making my daughter summer clothes and my Easter outfit, a lilac colored flared pants and long jacket. I guess that lilac thing really stuck.
