Our Coffee Dilemma
My husband and I both love coffee, we just don't agree on what a good cup of coffee should taste like. I simply love hazelnut flavored coffee beans, or vanilla, or chocolate raspberry, or ... well you get the idea. My husband says that "stuff" is not coffee. He was always complaining how "terrible" his coffee tasted if he brewed his coffee beans after my flavored coffee beans. My daughter got so tired of this that she bought him his very own "Black & Decker Brew 'N Go" for Christmas. He loves it! Here is what he has to say about his coffee maker.
Pros
* A perfect machine for one person! The insulated thermal cup holds 15 ounces, just enough to get him to work.
* It's quite a bit smaller than our full size Mr. Coffee, and since we don't have a ton of counter space, this is really nice.
* It will brew his morning java in 2-3 minutes!
* Produces good tasting coffee, of course a lot depends on the quality of the coffee one purchases. We buy our own gourmet coffee beans and grind them fresh before brewing.
* No need to purchase filters, ever! The coffee maker comes with it's own metal filter. Simply dump out the grinds and rinse out when you're done.
* A light goes off when the coffee is done, and the coffee maker automatically turns itself off. My husband is almost paranoid about making sure electric appliances are turned off after we are done using them.
* Comes with a short cord to prevent accidents, and we like it because it just looks neater without a lot of extra cord on the counter.
Cons
* The lip on the "Brew 'N Go" cup is too fat, my hubby doesn't like it and won't use it. He simply pours his coffee into another thermal cup and uses that one instead. This is not to say that the cup is "bad", it's just a matter of personal preference. I personally don't care for it either.
* If the coffee is ground too fine, it will clog up the metal mesh filter ... that can make for a big mess when it overflows! Luckily we have a coffee grinder that allows us to grind coarse, medium or fine coffee. He simply grinds his beans in a medium texture and has had no more problems.
* If you don't wait a full minute after it has stopped brewing, the coffee maker will drip. Hubby takes care of this by emptying out the coffee grinds and cleaning it while he is waiting. This additional time usually takes care of any dripping, and if it does occur it is only water, not coffee.
* The filter basket, permanent filter, travel mug and lid are all dishwasher safe - on the top rack only.
How The Brew 'N Go Works
Place the filter in the basket, add coffee (not much is needed, only 2 1/2 tablespoons is called for in the manual).
Fill the travel mug with cold water and add to the reservoir. Put the lid on the mug and place on the mug rest - push the start button and a light will come on. This light goes off when the coffee is done. One nice tip Black and Decker gives in their manual is to add your cream and sugar to the mug before putting it on the mug rest - as the mug fills up with coffee, it automatically blends nicely with your cream and sugar!
Warranty Information
As is standard with most appliances these days, this coffee maker has a one year warranty.
Other reviewers have complained that extra thermal cups cannot be purchased for this machine. This is not true. I called the 800 number in our manual this morning, and was told to call a different toll free number for replacement parts. I spoke with a very nice person who said extra mugs can be purchased for $7.95 and an additional $5 for shipping and handling. When I told her that amount was probably about what our daughter paid for the coffee maker new, she said she would waive the shipping charges! I thought that was great customer service!
Final Thoughts
My husband is very happy owning his very own personal coffee maker, the "Black & Decker Brew 'N Go". I'm happy that I no longer hear about how my coffee is ruining the taste of his coffee. And our daughter is happy that she was able to find my husband something he needed and loves (that's a hard thing to do!).
