I agree.

One question: I've been told that soap can permanently alter the flavor given off by the mechanism. I note that you wash the unit with soap and water. What is your experience.

Regards.

Hi, just wanted you to know this is the best review on a French press coffee maker that I have read.

I have never used one and this review told me the basics.

Thanks for a great review with all the details and explanations.

We had one of these; here in the UK we call them Cafetiere's, and most know them as filter jugs perfect for filter type coffee against the older pleated paper for coffee machines.. Anyway we had this jug and it was great until the plastic handle gave way. I recall the handle itself didn't feel good as it was too narrow. Now we have a Pyrex model which is just as good but still suffers from that pesky plastic lid. Can't have everything; at least its dishwasher safe!

Thank you very much for the comment!

You ask a great question. From what I can find, the only difference is in the names. The French Press is also called a: "Press Pot, Coffee Plunger or cafetière". And I've seen just plain coffee 'press', which I use a bit in my review. I can't find anything in my searching describing those names as something different from a basic press design.

There's some great information here on Wikipedia about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_press

This was a fantastic review and I think deserving of one of the coveted MH (most helpful) ratings. Unfortunately, I don't have a title and therefore don't have the ability to give anything higher than VH.

You really seemed to cover just about all the bases in this review. And I'm such a big coffee drinker (you can check out, if you haven't already), my review on the Capresso grinder that I recently bought.

The ONLY question I have is whether you know what the differences are between different French presses. I got one from a Tupperware sale (before we moved back to Richmond we went to Tupperware headquarters near Orlando each year for their 40% off and clearance sale). It seems to work pretty well, but wondered what the really expensive presses have that the others don't.

Again, terrific review!
