dneblank's Full Review: Bunn B10 10-Cup Coffee Maker
After my Cuisinart Grind and Brew broke, I felt it was time to move on to something new. The grinder was messy and and coffee wasn't that hot. One day at Sears, I noticed that Bunn had a consumer machine so I began to research it online. After reading many reviews here and at other coffee sites, it appeared to be a good buy. I ended up buying at Wholelattelove.com.
The Bunn works differently than most coffee makers. There is a tank in the machine that keeps water hot all the time. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a power waster, since the machine is always on, but the machine doesn't seem to run too often to keep the water hot. (You can hear when the heating element is activated.) The benefit to the hot water tank is that when you want coffee, the water is already hot and 10 cups are made in about 3 minutes. Since the water goes through so fast, you must use specially made Bunn filters, which are deeper than other filters. The filters cost about the same as regular filters (about $1.00 for 100.)To make the coffee, the tank is filled and the water is heated. Then when you want to brew, you put grinds in the hopper, which slides easily in the front, and pour the amount of water you want brewed in the top. When you close the lit, that water enters the tank and pushes the equal amount of already heated water out through the grinds. It sounds a bit complicated, but it makes sense when you're making the coffee.
The coffee is brewed at 200 degrees, supposedly the best brewing temperature. I've used both Dunkin Donuts coffee and Fairway's Ethiopian in it and both came out very well. I find that I need to use a scoop more of grinds than I normally would because the water flows through the grinds so quickly. Otherwise, the brew would be a bit watery.
I ordered a white machine to match my other appliances but there is little to the machine that is white. The tank is stainless steel and the supplied carafe has a black handle. The Bunn machine is 14 inches tall and easily fits under my cabinets, though you have to pull it out to feed the water in to the top. There are two switches on it, one on the side near the back which turns the machine on and off. The directions tell you only to turn it off if you're not using the Bunn for more than 2 or 3 days because the water in the tank will evaporate. The other switch is in the front and turns on the hot plate.
The Bunn comes with a three year warranty. No scooper is supplied.
