mcswarsik's Full Review: Cuisinart DGB-300 10-Cup Coffee Maker
After working the midnight shift for 22 years, I would like to say that I am a connoisseur of fine coffee. Unfortunately I can't, as I don't think stumbling to the coffee pot, pouring a cup and throwing in my face to wake up, qualifies.
My wife wanted a new coffeemaker for Christmas and as we have always been a Mr Coffee family, I went in search of a new one. I found a modern eye pleasing Mr Coffee at Costco for $40.00 but my attention was drawn to a Cuisinart Coffee Bar Automatic Grind & Brew Coffeemaker selling for $80.00.
This model automatically grinds those magic beans and turns them into the delicious brew that bring me back to the land of the living. The store where my wife liked to grind her own, had closed and I thought this would be perfect for her. Upon arriving home and finding her distressed, I decided to cheer her up by giving her this gift early. Thus we have used it and this is my "epinion".
The Cuisinart Coffee Bar Automatic Grind & Brew Coffeemaker can be used to grind and brew whole bean coffee or pre-ground. It can be set to automatically grind and brew at a specified time and to shutoff up to 4 hours later. The maximum amount of "Joe" that you can make at one time is 10 5oz. cups.
It comes with a scoop for measuring beans, a stater supply of #4 cone paper filters(cone filters are double the price of normal filters). It also has a gold tone permanent filter (wash and reuse after every use) that provides a hardier, richer taste but may leave some sediment in the bottom of your cup. Even if you don't use it, it's great as a backup in case you do run out of paper filters.
Setting the time and programming it to brew were well explained in the manual and rather easy. If you want to use pre-ground coffee simply press the Grind Off button. Making "java" on the spot is just a matter of hitting the "On" button.
My wife likes the sound of the grinder. My daughter says she can hear it in the morning when it automatically starts so it may act as another morning alarm for you.
It has a pause brew where you can steal a quick cup in mid perk. It is self cleaning (I don't know why they say this as it doesn't add the vinegar itself). It has a light that comes on when there is calcium buildup. We haven't used this yet. There is a temperature control that allows you to raise or lower the temp of the coffee.
More to Clean
When you use the whole beans, cleanup is quite the hassle. You have to clean the following components after every use...Grinder basket lid, grinder/filter basket, filter basket cover and the gold filter if you use it rather than paper filters.
It took us a few tries to get just the right amount of beans per cup. At first it came out too weak. They suggest how much to use but you must experiment. Also, I got the wrong blend at Dunkin Donuts. What do I know about blends...when you just throw it in your face, one blend is as good as the next....
Today, my wife came home with Dunkin Donuts Original Blend Beans, settled upon the right amount of bean/water ratio and gave to me the best coffee we have ever had at home. Even my mother-in-law likes the coffee it makes.
Now, because of our Cuisinart Coffee Bar Automatic Grind & Brew Coffeemaker, I am going to get up earlier, so rather than my usual douse myself method, I will relax and enjoy, what to my simple palate, is The Perfect Cup of Coffee.
