coops32's Full Review: DeLonghi RT200 Retro 2-Slice Toaster
Delonghi 2 slice Toaster great looks, but
Back to the drawing board ..
Well I grabbed this one thinking it was so cute and would be perfect for the beach house! I love the looks of this toaster and could not resist the retro styling it offered. Unfortunately, I decided not to go back home first and check out the reviews .
Some of the basics ..
With 800 watts of power and six settings this 2 slice toaster should be a dream come true! In addition, I love the idea that this one has three special function buttons stop/cancel, defrost for frozen bread, and bagel.
Dimensions of toaster: roughly 6 x 10 ˝ x 8 inches
Finish work: Brushed metallic exterior, but made cheaply. Disappointingly lightweight with budget type finishing details (controls are flimsy and the whole thing is very plastic feeling). I know it will break!
Cleaning and Care
The crumb tray is easily removed for cleaning. According to the manufacturer, the tray can go in the dishwasher as well so that is nice. The exterior doesnt show smudges as much as stainless steel and easily wipes clean.
Purchasing information:
I bought this at Target for around forty bucks. I think that a ten dollar toaster would probably serve me better.
This toaster is also available in a four slice model for approximately twenty dollars more.
This is all good, but how does it toast???
This thing takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r to toast a simple piece of bread! I have tried it for three weeks now and have been unable to consistently toast anything! The unhappy result is very non-gourmet dry toast with some parts hardly toasted at all. It has been a difficult and frustrating run. The toast pops up, but not very far. As a result, I would never want my children to use this for fear that they would burn their fingers every time they grabbed their toast. The exterior doesnt get too hot in use, but it is definitely not a stay cool type of product. I am impressed with the larger slots and their ability to house large items for toasting, but if it cant follow through and actually toast, then I guess it just doesnt matter.
Conclusions
I kept the box.
I kept it because when I got home with it in hand and read the reviews, I decided I better hold on to it! I even taped the receipt to the box so I would not lose it. I love the idea of this toaster, but form does not win out over function in this house and this one is being returned.
So, overall, I am disappointed. I would have gladly paid twice or even three times more for the fabulous looks of this toaster if Delonghi had put some time and effort into both the toasting capabilities and the overall quality of the product. It is all gimmicks and no goods.
I am glad it wipes clean easily because that is exactly what I did before I took it back.
