| bigbuyer's Full Review: KitchenAid KT2651X Epicurean 475 Watts Stand Mixer |
The KitchenAid brand goes hand in hand with Hobart. Hobart makes those beefy industrial kitchen appliences. I have a five foot tall mixer at work. Built like a tank. We needed a smaller mixer for some R&D work in the laboratory (don't ask). I bought one of these units because it had the big bowl. I bought several bowls and had them teflon coated inside-a nice blue color (don't ask).
The mixer is great but there are a few things you MUST know before and after buying. This model DOES NOT tilt back. The bowl drops a few inches. You have to remove the whisk to get the bowl out. The whisk drops into the bowl, you then take the bowl out. Unlike the twist off bowl, this baby has a firm clip that requires you to wrench it out. Now I know a lot of people will think I'm nit picking (Do you know what that refers to?)If you had to work hour upon hour in front of this thing, yanking the bowl in and out to keep up with a stop watch you would be pretty picky too.
Now the really serious part. The Second I flipped the speed switch I knew something was wrong. It did not have the solid firm feel that my other lesser units have. After approximately three uses the switch jammed and would not work. It jammed while running and would not turn off until I yanked the plug. This component seems to be a cheapo way of cutting costs. You DON'T skimp on a critical component like a speed switch. The mixer is now in the repair center for a couple of weeks. This may be an isolated case. I do not claim that this is widespread. KA mixers are great-love em!
UPDATE!!! After several conversations with a Company rep,I found that the power switch is a problem. The manufacturer KNOWS it is bad but they are already shipped out and on the shelves. I had a second unit sent to replace the first and actually bought another of the same model. BOTH had bad switches. The motor is designed to slowly increase in speed until it reaches the the right RPM. The problem is the switch locks into a speed and you cannot turn it off. You can increase the speed but you may not be able to get the switch to go back off! That is a BIG problem. I bought a "lesser" model that tilts back and has the good ol' low tech switch that works like a charm. STAY AWAY from this model.
