KitchenAid KFP670 Professional Food Processor
Why, When, and Where
Every Christmas we celebrate with two gift exchanges. One is for the family as a whole with a few friends included in the festivities. We do a boy/girl type exchange with a $20.00 limit. For the second exchange which we do on Christmas eve, we limit the event to the immediate, married brother-sister type couples with moms and dads included. The price set on this one is $200.00 with a minimum of $100.00. I sometime cheat on this one if I can find a bargain that is well worth $100.00 or more. Shhh.... don't tell on me. I haven't reviewed the gift we received this past Christmas but I do want to review what my husband's mom and dad got. By the way, we never know who the gift came from and are not allowed to ask either. This one wasn't from my husband and I, this much I do know.
The KitchenAid KFP670 Professional Food Processor, Out of the Box
Included with the KitchenAid Pro Processor (KFP670) is the processor, two bowls, multi purpose blades, reversible shredding and slicing discs, citrus press, a dough blade, egg whip, a full size multi purpose blade, two piece food pusher, and a spatula. The bowls sizes are 11 cup, and the other is small. I can't remember if it's 3 cups or 2.5 cups. I think it's 2 and a half cup though.
Besides the basic stuff you need to run the processor with that's listed above, you'll also get a manual with a decent list of recipes. The instructions are simple to follow. There is a manufacturers warranty card too. Be sure to fill it out and send it in or register your appliance online through KitchenAid. That url is: http://www.kitchenaid.com/home.jsp
There is something odd about these models and I am not certain whether it's on purpose or just a fluke but I've noticed that there are different things included with some that are not with others or the accessory varies slightly. Maybe it was just us. I honestly believe we got a bit more than we were suppose to. Like an extra blade or something. Oh well... shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, right?
Using the KitchenAid KFP670 Professional Food Processor:
I made pie dough the first time in mom's KitchenAid. It was really easy and I used a recipe from the manual. I used the multipurpose blade and the pulse control. The crust turned out flaky and tender. I was surprised really. I also have had the chance to make a queso dip blend in it as well and used the shredder disc and multipurpose blade.
If you want to use the mini bowl, you'll have to sit it down in the chef's bowl. It's works like a small chopper in this fashion.
There are actually only two speeds. That's the main speed (electronic processing sensor). Like *on* and then pulse. I think pulse would probably be used the most. I know it would be for me and is with my Cuisinart processor. (Which I like better by the way)
The buttons work much like those on my iPod. They are light touch and easy to clean by simply wiping them off.
Oh! I forgot to mention the storage case. It's clear and your accessories fit neatly inside for easy storage. You'll only be able to fit the basic amount inside though. Any extras purchased will need another case or stuck elsewhere.
Cleaning up after Use
Ok.. easy enough really but food does tend to stick in the lid. Most food product is simple to rinse out but cheese and anything that tends to be sticky (dough) will stick in the crevices. If you clean immediately after use you should have no problem. Everything is dishwasher safe, with the exception of the processor of course and any lids should be placed on the top shelf. Cleaning the processor is a simple as wiping it off. Wait too long and you'll be chipping food off. The lid locks on but is easily removed.
Miscellaneous Inclusions:
The blades/discs are stainless steel and should never rust. The processor has a 670 watt induction motor (pretty sure that's it) that's enough power to handle most jobs. The bowls are clear polycarbonate and supposedly that is for toughness and durability. So far so good. We've not broken one of them yet. The measurements are: Depth: 10 1/2 inches, height: 14 25/32 inches and width: 8 21/32 inches. It comes in white and as far as I know, that's it. I know some other models come in white, black, and what they call vanilla. I can't be certain if this particular model is available in those colors. Note: the food pusher is not quite as sturdy as I'd hoped. It will do the job but I fear it will be the first thing to crack or break if or when anything does.
The multipurpose blade, blends, chops, mixes, minces, and emulsifies. The discs shred and slice. Perfect for cheese and onions or bell peppers.
The citrus press extracts juice but either myself or my mother-in-law has used that feature yet.
The thing is super heavy! It weighs nearly 23 pounds but unless your moving it around a lot, it aids in keeping it stable. The motor is pretty quiet but not as quiet as the Cuisinart. I guess I should review that one too, huh?
Pricing:
Shop around folks. I've seen this processor listed as high as $290.00. Don't you do it! You can get it for about $230.00 on Amazon or about $190.00 at Kitchen and Home Gadgets. I don't know what they paid for it at the gift exchange but I'll be willing to bet it was more than $200.00.
Warranty:
We've not had to use it but if we do, it better be within the year. Standard to most, a year warranty is included but it's a really good one. It's a hassle-free replacement warranty and if it fails you anytime during the first year they will replace it completely! The new one will be guaranteed for another full year. No picking it up someplace because they'll deliver it to your door. Nice warranty.
Final Recommendation:
Personally, I recommend this brand and model highly. It is considered a pro model but I don't know if I'd go that far. It is very nice though and performs admirably. My mom-in-law is totally satisfied and swears by it. The processor is great for a medium size family (say 4). I would not recommend trying to do extremely large batches in it though. I think they make a 12 cup processor that may be able to handle a slightly bigger amount. You can mix a two layer cake recipe but beyond that, you'll need to do a double take. I believe you'll be very satisfied with this one. If you have doubts, check out Cuisinart. That is my favorite brand for nearly any small appliance though mom would argue with me on that one.
