lushlindy's Full Review: Panasonic SD-YD250 Bread Machine
This is my second Panasonic breadmaker. My first one which was almost identical except it didn't have a yeast dispenser, died after 3 years of use some years ago. Otherwise there have been no significant changes to the bread machine. I bought my first Panasonic in Canada but this machine isn't available here anymore. So I purchased this second one on eBay in the US. I called Panasonic and they said the warranty was no good in Canada so if it breaks I'm done for. I don't consider this helpful service. I think it's very poor that Panasonic doesn't either sell or service this machine in Canada. So much for free trade. The customer service was neither helpful not particularly polite either.
It makes decent bread except the cycles seem to me too long. It shouldn't take up to 4 or 5 hours to get a loaf of bread, including that l-o-n-g hour or so at the start when the ingredients rest and nothing happens. What gives with that anyway?
The yeast dispenser is an improvement though in my old Panasonic I just put the yeast on top of the ingredients and that worked fine too. I"m disappointed that this machine doesn't have a proper cake cycle which other machines have. I did use just the bake option and made a carrot cake. It turned out ok but took over an hour to cook. Too long; better to use the oven. What the Panasonic has is the reputation for durability though I must say my first one didn't last very long. I'm hopeful for a better result with this one. It's an easy machine to use. I made a loaf within an hour of it arriving in the mail. The LCD on top is quite clear and easy to understand. The machine operates quietly and doesn't jump around on the counter. I wish the beeper was louder though. If you're doing laundry in the basement you will not hear this machine. It's easy enough to clean though if you have a lot of baked on dough you have to be careful not to use a lot of water in cleanup. You could wreck the sensor inside the machine. A clear window on top would have been helpful though checking the dough really requires a good look at it inside. I open the lid and check the dough several times before it bakes. All in all it works fine and is probably the best bread machine available though I've heard good things about the Oster too and it's a fair bit cheaper.
