panoramix's Full Review: Panasonic SD-YD250 Bread Machine
After I saw my mother in law's bread maker in France I told my self I had to also enjoy the wonders of waking up to the smell of fresh bread in the morning. I did a few searches and finally decided on the Panasonic SD-YD250. I've come to trust Panasonic products and for my first bread maker, I didn't want to go wrong.
The same day I got the bread maker, I ran out and got all the ingredients to make a nice wholewheat bread. The manual clearly explained why each of the ingredients is important, from the flour, to the salt and the water. I followed the recipe and instructions in the manual, only having trouble measuring the molasses. I just punched a couple of buttons, setting the size, crust color, type of loaf, and the time I wanted it to be ready (overnight program. The resting, mixing, kneading, rising and baking was all handled by the machine. The next morning I had the wonderful smell of a fresh baked loaf. Remembering the instructions, I grabbed my oven mitt, pulled out the pan, and popped out my loaf.
Despite letting it rest until the steam came out, I saw that my loaf had a little indentation on the top, and the bread was quite thick. Looking at the chart in the manual, I realized that I used Iodized salt, which prevents the yeast from growing correctly. For my next loaf, armed with Plain Salt (non-iodized), and a cup of raisins, I made a raisin sandwich bread for my friend and his wife - They loved the bread, and only complained that I was too cheap on the raisins.
Even my mother who used to bake bread in a brick oven in Sicily admitted that the herb bread I made her was exceptionally good.
I love eating foods without preservatives, and sometimes looking at the labels in supermarkets, you'd think that there are over 20 ingredients that go into bread, yet I can make a better tasting cheaper loaf from just: Flour, Milk, Butter, Sugar, Yeast, Salt. Cleaning up is afterwards cinch the inside pan is virtually non-stick, and the rest of the areas which you made to clean are plastic or stainless steel.
Does the label on your bread have words that a 1st grader can't pronounce? I make a loaf every 2 days, and I make great tasting sandwiches to take to work, I've felt healthier than ever avoiding all the fast food places near my work.
There are many types of bread to make, I'm still explorer the various options with wholewheat, and adding different mixes of wholegrain cereals. My favorite is still Honey - Walnut Wholewheat.
I wish that the bread maker took a little less room, compared to my mother in law's machine, mine seems like a monster, but I can make 3 loaf sized, M - L - XL, and she can't ah-ha!
