Great bread - wrong gift!

Pros: Easy to use and programmable timer.

Cons: It is not a very attractive addition to the kitchen counter.

The Bottom Line: I would recommend the Panasonic SD-YD250 Bread Machine for no other reason than the aroma of fresh-baked bread when you wake up.

Okay, you would think that I would have learned a lesson many years ago - or at least that I would have smartened up somewhat.

First mistake - Telling my wife that I did not feel as though I needed to get her a Mother's Day gift because she is not my mother.  This is not the first year, by any means, that I have tried that approach and it has never worked in the past.  I have no idea of why I thought it would have worked this year.

Second mistake - Having a present given to my wife on Mother's Day which is a household "work" item.  The Panasonic SD-YD250 Bread Machine is a great product but NOT for Mother's Day.  At least, it is a gift that will be enjoyed and used in the future.

The Panasonic Bread Machine is a tremendous help to the family.  I have never owned one before but my sister has one - that gave me the idea to get one for my wife.  It has a programmable timer that can be set to turn the machine on and bake the bread completely by itself and it will be ready for you to enjoy upon waking to the wonderful aroma of fresh baked bread.  The interior of the baking "pan" is non-stick so clean-up is basically just a wipe.  The size of the loaf of bread is over 1.3 pounds so it can easily feed a family.  The outside of the bread machine stays cool so there is no chance of little hands getting burned.  The machine comes with a recipe book for many different kinds of bread. My sister tells me that you have to use "bread flour" which has a higher gluten than regular flour. She also told me that some companies have pre-packed bags of mix to just toss into the bread machine along with some water and butter for great tasting kinds of bread. These are usually available at stores like Sonoma-Williams.  I paid $120 for my Panasonic Bread Machine and that was on sale at Macy's.

As I said earlier, you would think I would have learned a lesson after being married for several years.  Well, I have.  My wife's birthday is in June and I found a beautiful pair of opal earrings at Nordstrom's in their Fine Jewelry Department.  After her initial shock of the bread machine for Mother's Day and some rope-a-dope that Muhammed Ali would have been proud of, I laughed and got out the earrings that were all wrapped up in a Nordstrom's silver box and told her that the earrings were the real Mother's Day gift.  It worked like a charm.

I now have a couple of things to look forward to this coming week.  I am looking forward to the great tasting bread from the Panasonic Bread Machine - and also looking forward to shopping for a replacement birthday gift.
