Re: Re: which one to get? (Reply to this comment)

Hi tfmt.
There are several websites that offer ice cream machines for the highly discriminating connoiseur.
These machines go in price anywhere from about $29.00 all the way up to a whopping $999.00 or more!
Of course, the ones for less than $30.00 are not the self-contained units. The self-contained units
are much better, as they have their own sealed refrigerating system to prefreeze the ice cream.
So, look around for the one that you like the most. Some of the machines featured on this websites offer sites to visit for the right one.
Chef's Catalog, where I bought mine, is one of them. Good luck!

If you were going to buy an ice cream machine today would you go for the bigger or smaller one? Is there a web site to compare the different models?

Chef Emeril Lagasse Uses This Machine a Lot! (Reply to this comment)
by daquan
Hi marytara!
I've seem celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse use this exact same machine coutless times on both of his cooking shows that are featured on the Food Network, Essence of Emeril & Emeril Lve! He must be a proud user of it too!
Thanks again for the high rating that you gave me on the review that I did on my Gelato TA-009A ice cream machine! It seems that we both have good taste in ice cream machines!

The Kitchen Table is the Permanent Home For My Gelato TS-009A! (Reply to this comment)
by daquan
Hi marytara.
I keep my machine on the table for use. I simply ran a heavy duty 3-prong extension cord
along the wall from behind the fridge across from the table.
Then, by lightly pinning the cord against the wall, just enough for access to the female end of plug, the carrying problem with the heavy machine is solved! Neat little trick!
I'd love to do a review on this great machine, but so far, Epinions.com has not yet made it available for review. When they do, I will.

Re: Great Review.... (Reply to this comment)

I'm afraid any self contained unit with a motor powerful enough and especially a compressor built in is going to be quite substantial. I'd like to be proven wrong.
It's not unlike an air conditioner or small refrigerator, and you know how heavy those are.

I Just Got the cheaper Gelato model! (Reply to this comment)
by daquan
Hi marytara!
I ordered the cheaper Gelato model for $200.00, half the cost of your machine. It seell originally for $400.00.
And yes, you're right! Even though my unit is slightly smaller than yours, it's still fairly large, heavy & awkward. And it does strongly demand a lot of kitchen real estate! It's not a machine that you'd want to lug around on a daily basis.
It looks almost similar to the larger stainless steel model I've seen here and at Chef's Catalog, where I bought mine. It has a super high-impact plastic housing, has it's own built-in sealed CFC-free refrigerating system that uses R-134 freon and and features a removable aluminum " pail " or " bucket ", if you will. I call the bowl a pail or bucket because it has a swing handle on the top that makes it look like a little sand bucket similar to the plastic one that a child uses on the beach to play with sand.
I did make a cheap quick ice cream and it was great! It makes the old fashioned crank bucket look real obselete!

I got the original unit at a yard sale (Reply to this comment)
by rick_scheps
I picked up the original Simac Gelataio at a yard sale for $10! Mine uses the old freon and has a timer which will shut off the churner with 5 minutes left. It is an awesome machine and probably weighs in at 50 pounds or more! I created a shelf just for the unit and it is industrial strength! My unit didn't come with any paper work. If you have some kind of address for the company, I would appreciate it if you could give it to me in another comment. Enjoy your machine, it's impossible not too!

Wow $400.00 (Reply to this comment)

But then again if I were to add up the cost of all the various frozen desserts we have bought over the years it would probably exceed this amount. Your in-laws must really love you!! Smile. Great review.

I have an Ice cream maker also (Reply to this comment)
by glomarrone
Hi,
But I only use it in the summertime. I used to make ice cream a lot when I first received it, but this past summer I only used it three times. I think I don't use it as much now is because I moved it to the basement. Out of sight, out of mind. Hope you get more use out of yours. Mine was a gift also.
See you again.
