Braun Handi-Blender : how to use a stick blender
Written: Mar 06 '01 (Updated Mar 06 '01)
What is a Stick-Blender
Usually if you want to blend or puree something, you have to pour the mixture into a standard blender or a food processor.
So what’s the problem?
If you're working with a large amount to be processed, such as with soup you will need to work in batches. This is time consuming.
If you're working with something hot on the stove. You will need to wait for it to cool down so as to avoid burns. Again a time-waster.
Plus you'll have to wash your blender in addition to all your pots and pans.
A stick blender … also called a hand blender … if a wandlike device with a rotary blade on the bottom. On the gripping handle is a button. Press the button the blades spin, release it and they stop.
It is incredibly simple to use.
Does it Do the Job?
How many times can I say yes. In the winter I make a lot of soups, stew-like dishes, sauces, and so forth.
Whether I've needed to puree a soup, pulse chop some tomatoes, etc. this does the job.
It has full one-handed operation. Works quickly and effectively. And cleanup in a snap.
The only time I’ve hit a snag is when I've been using it on a dish with meat ... the meat shreds and tends to wrap around the base of the blade. But even this cleans up in a few minutes.
What Have I used it For
Milk or Cream based soups
Whether it be a potato soup, or a corn chowder ... all I need do is run my stick blender working from the top of the soup down until the texture is smooth.
Pasta sauce
My family prefers a textured sauce to a smooth one so often I will buy canned whole peeled tomatoes. One they are seasoned and have cooked for a few hours all I need do is pulse my stick blender through the sauce until it reaches the desired level of chunkiness.
Southern BBQ - shredded meat in BBQ sauce
I can leave the chicken meat in large chunks or strips until the very end. Then I use my stick blender on pulse until the meat is shredded into the sauce.
Slim Fast
These things are wonderful for the thorough mixing necessary in SlimFast and other diet shake mixes. However make sure to use a glass that is about twice as deepas you need it to be to avoid splatter.
How to avoid mess
Make sure there is at least a couple of inches of soup/sauce/liquid above the blades of the blender.
Do not turn it on until it is already fully submerged in whatever you are blending.
Do not try and remove it without turning it off.
Closing thoughts
I have bought many small appliances over the years that have gone unused for the most part. I have used this device almost weekly since it's purchase over 5 years ago.
It always does the job, cleans up easily, and has given me little to no trouble.
