| sylvanb's Full Review: Oster 3809 Toast Logic 4-Slice Toaster |
Things I hate spending money on: Socks. Motor oil. Small appliances.
Your toaster may not be your most glamorous possession, but if your family is like mine, it's one of those things that you use every day (more than once a day at our house, as we like toast for snacks), and therefore it affects the quality of your life whether you notice it or not. We didn't think much about our toaster until it died. We got a replacement for ten bucks at the drugstore, and we sure didn't think much of that one - it was a daily frustration. So off I went to the WWW to research the lofty subject of toasters, beginning at Epinions, of course.
The Oster "Toast Logic" two-slice toaster which we bought has been a pleasure to use. Here's what I like about it:
It makes toast. It also makes toasted bagels. A little tweaking is needed for frozen items (we keep a stash on hand, plus in the summer we even keep the current loaf in the freezer so it won't grow fur) but we've learned how to get the toastiness we prefer. The slots are wide enough so you don't have to pry bagels out with a fork (oops, forgot to unplug YAAAAAAAAH!) and they adjust to center the slice. Toast comes out fairly evenly browned from edge to edge; bagels are usually not so even but nothing we can't live with. There is a little window so you can look to see how brown your toast is getting; I usually forget it is there, but once in a while it is just the ticket.
It is easy to clean. The crumb tray slides out (they claim it is dishwasher-safe but I just rinse it off and pop it back in) and the smooth plastic body has a minimum of bumps and grooves so it is easy to wipe off.
It looks pretty good. I don't consider a toaster to be part of the Decor, but actually I think this one is pretty attractive. As small appliances go.
It was a good buy. Listed at about $30, I got it from an e-tailer for under $25 including shipping. Caution: I did not find it on the shelves of any local stores.
In fact, I have learned that a small appliance that really does its job can bring daily pleasure to life. Now I think I will go have a piece of wheat toast with butter and honey.
