cbgresh's Full Review: Hamilton Beach 26500 Belgian Waffle Iron
Waffles and ice cream are a favorite dessert and snack for our family, but we had to go out to buy them because I didn't have a waffle iron. I broke down 3 years ago and spent $29.99 on the Proctor Silex Morning Baker Belgian Waffle Maker. The price has since dropped or try to find it on sale!! We have had waffles at least once a week since the purchase. I make waffles and ice cream, chicken and waffles, plain waffles, waffles and fruit, apple waffles, banana waffles, etc. We have waffles for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and no one is tired of them because there are so many versions of the basic waffle.
Growing up my parents had a waffle iron that was a chore to use. The waffles would stick, it was hard to clean and the temperature setting was never correct. This new model not only makes huge waffles, but it is simple to use.
Features:
1- Preheat/ready light: When the iron is plugged in an indicator light goes on and remains on until the iron is preheated and ready to pour the batter in. the preheat stage takes approx. 5 minutes.
2-Non-stick surface: The first time the waffle iron is used the instructions recommend greasing the iron with vegetable oil. I forgot to do this and there wasn't a problem, the waffles still didn't stick. I did do it the next time and it has helped I am sure. Once the iron is greased(tempered) the first time it does not have to be greased again. Not only do the waffles not stick, but clean-up is simple. i simply take a soapy sponge and wipe the cooking surface and exterior of the waffle iron. Do not submerge the waffle iron in water!
3- Compact: The waffle iron is small and can be stored upright or laying down in a cabinet or drawer. The cord wraps around the handle and stays out of the way.
4- Great waffles: You can't mess up when making waffles with the Morning baker waffle Iron. They are foolproof and will be perfect every time as long as you don't forget they are cooking and burn them(I have done this).
Here is my simple recipe for crispy waffles:
2 eggs beaten until fluffy...add 2 cups flour, 1 3/4 cup milk, 4 tsps baking powder, 1 pinch of salt, 2 TBSP. sugar and 1/2 cup vegetable oil. Mix all until just smooth. Preheat waffle iron and pour 3/4 cup of batter into the center of the hot iron. The waffles will be done when steam no longer vents from the sides of the iron(about 4 minutes).
I don't know what we did before we go the Proctor Silex Morning Baker Belgian Waffle Iron...well, yes I do, we went out for mediocre waffles at that House of Something place! So glad I broke down and spent the whopping $29.99!!!!!
