Meet the Easter Bunny - Hop

Apr 23, 2011
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Cute, mostly entertaining movie.

Cons:Not the most original  Flat characters.

The Bottom Line: Hop has some problems, but it manages to be entertaining for the most part.

While there are all kinds of movies about Christmas, many of the other holidays are featured as much in movies. The new movie Hop gives a lot of attention to Easter.

As a child, Fred O'Hare spots the Easter Bunny. As an adult, Fred is working and is living at home again. His parents aren't happy about the situation and try to push him into finding a job. His sister Samantha has gotten him an interview and wants him to house sit for her boss. On his way to the house, Fred hits E.B., a talking rabbit. Fred is freaked out by E.B., but is convinced to let him in the house.

E.B. is actually the son of the Easter Bunny and is supposed to take over for his father. E.B would rather be a drummer for a band and feeling pressure over the demands of being the Easter Bunny, he leaves Easter Island. His father is very worried, and sends the Pink Berets to find E.B while Carlos, the head chick and second in command for the Easter Bunny, plots to take over. E.B. tries to get Fred to help him get a break as a drummer while avoiding the Pink Berets.

Hop is cute and entertaining overall and is a decent family friendly movie. I did enjoy the movie when I went to see it, though I didn't have high expectations. Unfortunately, the plot really isn't that original. The plot is very like the plots of the Santa Claus movies with how things are set up on Easter Island and how Carlos is trying to take over. I loved the look of the factory where the candy is made, though it isn't that different from the North Pole in some movies. It would have been nice if the plot had been more original. I still enjoyed the movie overall, though other people may not feel the same.

During the first several minutes of Hop, both Fred and E.B. are introduced when they are still children. The movie then jumps forward twenty years and sets up the situations for both characters at that point. The plot isn't that complicated and it is very easy to keep straight what is going on for both characters. Children might find the movie slightly more complicated. The movie is predictable and there aren't any surprises. It begins with a voice over by one of the characters. By the end of the voice over, the one thing that might have been somewhat surprising is shared. I don't think that was a good idea.

Hop has a blend of live action and animation. Most of the movie and characters are live action. The talking animal characters are created with computer animation. I think some things at Easter Island have also been created with computer animation, like the factory. I love how it looks. The animated characters are done well. E.B. is really cute, especially as a young bunny when he is adorable. Even though he is a chick, Carlos looks rather mean and sneaky. Most of the interactions between the real actors and the computer generated characters look fine, though something looks slightly off in one scene when Samantha is holding E.B. I do like the look of the characters and settings.

E.B. and Fred are the main characters in Hop. Despite them being in so much of the movie, neither of them is that developed. Fred is a bit of a slacker who is always finding problems with potential jobs. He does seem to be trying more, but that gets messed up when he meets E.B. Fred has a few issues, but he is likable overall. James Marsden is fine in the part, though he does seem a little old for the character. E.B is determined to live his dream of being a drummer, which is why he runs away. He doesn't stop to think about the consequences of his actions at that point. With the way he acts, it is easy to see why Fred gets annoyed with him at times. Russell Brand does the voice for the character. It is a little odd to hear his voice coming from a cute animated bunny. Brand also makes a short appearance later in the movie as a production assistant on a talent program.

Samantha is Fred's sister. She goes along with what her parents say about pushing Fred into a job, but she acts like she doesn't fully agree with their decisions. She tries to be supportive of her brother. She seems nice enough, but she isn't around enough and Kaley Cuoco doesn't get much to do. Harry and Bonnie are Fred and Samantha's parents. Harry makes it very clear every time he turns up that he is disappointed in Fred. Harry is a bit of a jerk. Gary Cole doesn't have much to do with the part. Bonnie goes along with her husband most of the time. Elizabeth Perkins is really wasted in the part. Alex is Fred and Samantha's adopted younger sister. Alex is an over achiever and favored by their parents. She doesn't seem very nice in the few scenes she's in.

E.B.'s father is the current Easter Bunny when the movie begins. He took over from his father and takes his job seriously. He seems mostly concerned with the job, but it becomes clear that he truly cares about his son. He isn't in a lot of the movie, so there is very little shared about him. Hugh Laurie does fine with the voice of the character. Carlos is the head chick and he's been the second in command at Easter Island for a long time. He is fed up with that position and has plans to take over. One of the chicks, Phil, acts as his flunky. Hank Azaria does the voice for both of the characters. The other animal characters don't really stand out. David Hasselhoff turns up as himself in a few short scenes.

Main Cast

Hank Azaria - Voice of Carlos/Voice of Phil
Russell Brand - Voice of E.B.
Gary Cole - Harry
Kaley Cuoco - Samantha
Hugh Laurie - Voice of E.B.'s Dad
James Marsden - Fred
Elizabeth Perkins - Bonnie

Tim Hill - Director

Hop could have been more original and had a stronger plot and more developed characters. Despite those problems, the movie is entertaining overall.
