All the whoo's in whooville.......

Nov 20, 2000

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Jim Carrey, Ron Howards terrific directing, creative sets

Cons:none at all, this movie is perfect

"It came without ribbons, it came without tags, it came without packages, boxes or bags!" And he Puzzled and Puzzled till his puzzler was sore...then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.

"Maybe Christmas...doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means alittle bit more."

The very message that this film will send to its audience lies within this very quote from the film. Each and every year, people rush to the stores, clearing the shelves, spending days and days shopping for presents. Lights are pain stakingly put up, and Christmas trees are bought at high prices. Yet, what is the real meaing of Christmas? Is it about all of these "Things"...these material items? No...of course not...but it has grown into that. The real meaning of Christmas, should be to spend time with your loved ones, and get to together in a holiday spirit. To share you feelings with all of your family and loved ones. To celebrate Christs birthday by joyful celebration.

Not only did "The Grinch" make me laugh on more than a few occasions, but it also made me feel. From begging to end, my whole body got into the Christmas spirit, and felt tingly inside. The film gave me a warm feeling by relaying that message that no matter how sinister a person you are...you can always change you ways. And you heart is never to weak to stop loving...you just have to find it in youself. Christmas brings this effect on people and into people.

Ron Howard, Director of Apollo 13 and Ed T.V. to name a few, hadn't made a movie for quite a while. "The Grinch" was the perfect opportunity to relinquish the elequance of his Directing. A special signiture that only Ron Howard can deliver in his films. I gave a big round of applause at the end of the movie for many things, one of them being the creativity put into the movie. Seeing the cartoon in my younger years, I can remember it vividly. The faces, the gadgets, and how bizzar the town of Whooville looked!!! Ron Howards achieved something that not many directors can...re-creating an actual cartoon, but with live actors and camaras. I felt as if the story had come to life, and the town actually exsisted. Between the lavishly arranged sets and the zaney automobiles, all of the details were strung out right down to the unique noses on the Townpeoples faces. I also applauded for Jim Carrey. No one, and I mean noone could have made a better Grinch.

Carrey Delivered a brilliant, funny, witty, crazy, off-the-wall, Grinchy, humbug-filled, amazing performance as the character of "The Grinch". Ever since I saw Jim Carrey in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" i've LOVED his acting. Not only does he approach each one of his roles with a certain tact and elegance...but he ALWAYS managed to bring the audience to their knees laughing hysterically. He mainly does this through improvising in his roles instead of just staying true to every little word written into the script. Its the improvising that has always made his funny. I believe he says in "The Grinch" as he holds an x-ray machine up to his heart: "Down two sizes! And this time I'm gonna keep it off!" At this point I fell onto the floor and cracked up to death. This joke and many more put this movie ahead of its time...and Carrey ahead of his time. As Carrey evolves into a more serious actor, I think for him, the more he enjoys doing this for a living. Goofing off, being himself.

I don't want to ignore another actress in this film who I thought was phenomenal and I have never seen before in any other movie. Her name is Taylor Momsen. She plays the little girl who dares to try and break "The Grinch" of his hatred for the people in whooville and the Christmas season. On top of being adorable, she is a terrific actress and singer. Howard even put a little bit into the film where she sings a song called "Where are you Christmas?". I predict that we're looking at the next child star. I'd love to see if she enjoyed working on this film. Be sure when you go to see it, to keep an eye out for her. She truely is a brilliant actress.

I assure every reader of this review that you will not only LOVE this movie, but that you will get that warm fuzzy feeling throughout it that I did. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion...and this is mine. I feel strongly that everyone should go to theaters and check it out. Who knows...you may even learn something.......I know I did.

"All the Whoo's down in whooville liked Christmas alot, but the Grinch who lay above did not."
