Pros:Gets all but the truly insane through 24-hours, 36-hours more likely, 48-possible
Cons:Adds more girth and weight to an already chunky HTC phone.
The Bottom Line: Go ahead; play with all the features of your Rezound super phone. More than likely you’ll still have power when you wake up tomorrow morning. I really like that.
When I purchased my HTC Rezound last month I was already thinking about ways to extend battery-life. Having previously owned an HTC Droid Incredible, I knew from experience that battery life was not a strong suit for HTC. Even though the Incredible was a 3G phone, the 1300mAh just couldn’t take that otherwise excellent phone through an entire day. I wound up purchasing a Seidio Innocell 3500mAh extended life battery that would typically give me 48 -72 hours on battery given normal usage and at least 36 hours of intense usage.

The early buzz on the Rezound was that while HTC had improved its power management skills, the stock 1620mAh battery was still a bit disappointing. This made sense to me. We were talking about a larger 4.3” HD Super LCD display (1280x720), a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor with a dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and a high energy sound system (Beats Audio) and of course a blistering 4G radio. Without hesitation I ordered the HTC 2750mAh Extended Life Battery and Replacement Back Door along with the new phone. I figured with my retained “unlimited data plan” and 4G performance I didn’t want to rely on periodic recharging during the day. It didn’t hurt that Verizon had lowered the price from $49.99 to $29.99 temporarily.
As it turn out though the stock battery usually gets me through a typical day unless I’m feeling particularly playful with a lot of free time on my hands. Using the stock battery today, I notice that I have 10+ hours on battery with 60% battery remaining. Not too shabby. I’ve let the Rezound employ all of HTC’s automatic battery conserving features that are easily over-ridden when necessary. This would easily get me through a work-day and then some.
HTC 2750mAh Extended Life Battery and Replacement Back Door
With the larger 2750mAh battery I find that I don’t have to rely on an economy mode. I can leave the phone on high performance settings and be assured that the battery will last at least 24 hours even under intense periodic use. Theoretically, if I did nothing but play with the phone all day I could deplete the battery in just about 13 hours. Still it would see me through a workday assuming I still had a job after this kind of behavior.
But, as I’ve gotten more used to the Rezound and use it more normally (checking email several times a day, a good deal of texting, several web queries and at least a few video clips watched in addition to listening to my music for perhaps an hour during the day), the extended life battery is providing me with up to 48 hours on battery. On heavy travel days when this “Knight of the Road” would be lost without Google Maps Navigation, battery-life may start declining giving me a total time on battery closer to 36 hours. That’s still pretty respectable.
I’ve noticed no increase in operating temperature caused by this massive battery. The HTC Rezound generally remains remarkably cool during operation regardless of the HTC battery in use.
Recharging the extended battery from the yellow warning indicator to full charge takes approximately 3 ½ hours. So plugging it in at bed-time seems the most practical charging routine.
All good things have their price
I’m not talking about $29.99 or $49.99 here. The HTC Rezound is already a stocky phone with just the standard equipment in use. Add the extended life battery and you add an additional 1/8” to the girth of this phone until it’s just over 5/8” thick. What had weighed 5.6oz will now weigh about 6.3oz. In a world that has gotten increasingly obsessed with super thin, feather-weight phones, this might not play particularly well.
Personally, I have only the slightest reservation with regard to this trade-off. But I’m a user who is partial to a heavier build, finding a bit of weight and thickness aids in the firmness of my grasp of the handset. I do however find that this added weight and thickness pretty much eliminates my willingness to carry my phone in my shirt pocket. It’s just not that comfortable. Fortunately, I generally carry my phone in my left front pants pocket where the additional dimensions are pretty much unnoticed.
The Replacement Back Door
HTC did a great job here replicating the quality build of the stock back door. The textured, sculpted rubberized finish of the door is retained as is the speakerphone grill. Missing is the Beats Audio logo on the bottom of the door. Also missing are the two “pinhole” microphone openings. With the added space created by the extended door, the speakerphone grill effectively eliminates any need for them.
Fortunately, this time around, HTC and a number of other manufacturers are producing cases and holsters that accommodate the extended battery and back door. I found a “no-name” TPU plastic case on eBay that adds no additional bulk to the handset and virtually no additional weight.
If you don’t mind the added thickness and weight, the HTC 2750mAh Extended Life Battery and Replacement Back Door will give you all the power you need to eliminate the worry about where you left your charger(s). Go ahead; play with all the features of your Rezound super phone. More than likely you’ll still have power when you wake up tomorrow morning. I really like that. I’m betting you will too.
