iRobot 500 Series Is Faulty and Customer Service Terrible

Cons: Poor customer service. Many mechanical problems.

The Bottom Line: Don't buy this. Unreliable, poorly manufactured. Customer service is terrible.

My two robots have been plagued by a litany of problems in the 9 months I've had them First, the spinning side brush arms constantly break off, despite getting the new brushes which are "virtually indestructable" according to iRobot. I have now had the brush motors in both of my iRobots die, which requires a replacement part. One brush motor died within 6 months of getting the robot, the other 3 months later. The screw mount for the spinning side brush was easily stripped by simply removing the side brush - again requiring a replacement part. One robot had a complete computer meltdown 3 months after I received it and I had to do an in-warranty exchange. The robots leave black marks on my white painted baseboards that cannot be completely scrubbed off without removing the paint.

Customer service is terrible. Their automated customer service system is convoluted and to actually talk to an agent you have to punch a bunch of buttons for things you don't want in order to be able to select agent. It took three months to get a brush motor and four months later I am still waiting for the bumper extensions that are supposed to fix the problem with the marks on my baseboards. I finally became so frustrated with the company that I filed a Better Business Bureau complaint about the bumper extensions.

The cleaning ability OK...it picks up my dog's long hair from hardwood floors OK but it leaves clumps of hair on my carpets despite the fact I clean the vacuums daily. For the amount of time I've wasted with customer service delays and mechanical problems, I would say, stick to your upright vacuum. My upright certainly does better job cleaning and in the 10 years I've owned mine its been way more reliable!
