I saw this movie and loved it, particularly Woola; however, it bothers me that you're comparing it to Avatar, Gladiator, and others. Considering John Carter has been around longer than Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers, Edgar Rice Burroughs's material is not the culprit in deriving from other works.

I heard one local reviewer argue that the biggest flaw of this movie is Disney's marketing. He believed the studio was not exploiting the original source material enough. That convinced me enough to go see it last Friday. I was disappointed to see how empty the auditorium was. This deserves a bigger audience than Avatar got.

BTW, SyFy just aired Princess of Mars, which was based on the same book John Carter was, this afternoon. Interesting to see another interpretation, although that production didn't have Disney's budget.

This movie has been in development for so long now. Nice to see it actually exist. Trailer don't look too great, but it's Andrew Stanton - anyone whose directed a Pixar film has my utmost respect.

That said, I have a bad feeling it will be a bomb. It has a huge budget and not nearly enough positive buzz. But hopefully it works out. Nice review!

Agree the books are great. Those were great adventure novels that should be republished.
