How to Get Rid of Ants? Raid Ant Killer Didn't Work on Black Ants

Pros:Kills insect when insecticide is sprayed directly onto the pest.
Cons:Didn't work as described. Horrible Odor.
The Bottom Line: For long term usage it was not effective in dealing with my problem with black ants. Avoid this product if ants are your primary concern.
I've never had a problem with ants in my home until I moved to southern California. I don't leave food sitting out or dirty dishes in the sink so I was surprised to see dozens of them congregated in various places on my counter tops. These little black ants have shown no interest in raiding the pantry or running off with the occasional cookie crumb. Since most of them are near the kitchen sink I assume they're seeking water. Regardless of their mission, I don't like them hanging out in my kitchen and have been using various products that should handle the problem. A typical insecticide spray like Raid Ant and Roach Killer Insecticide Spray was the first product I used on these pesky little bugs. When sprayed directly on to the ants it quickly killed them. But it hasn't prevented additional ants from visiting my counter tops.

Raid Ant and Roach Killer Insecticide Spray comes in a 17.5 oz aerosol can. The non-removable plastic top contains a push button and spray nozzle that forcefully releases the liquid iinsecticide. The product is formulated to kill ants, roaches, and a variety of other pesky insects. Raid Ant and Roach Killer is used for spraying surfaces, not for spraying into the air like an air freshener. When holding the can about 12" from the intended target enough product should be sprayed until the surface is wet. The manufacturer of Raid Ant and Roach Killer suggests using the spray along baseboards, doorways, windows, and any other location where insects may enter the home. The spray kills insects immediately on contact and supposedly has residual action that kills insects for up to 4 weeks after usage.
Using Raid Ant and Roach Killer Insecticide in My Kitchen
Since the kitchen counter top is where I prepare food and the baseboards in the kitchen are too close to where I place the pet food dishes I didn't feel comfortable spraying these areas. I used the Raid Ant and Roach Insecticide Spray only in areas that are inaccessible to pets and where food products and dishes are not stored. After thinking about where the ants might be gaining access I decided to spray the floors behind the stove and refrigerator. I also sprayed under the sink area after removing all the non-food products that were stored there.
The Raid Ant and Roach Killer aerosol can was easy to use. I had no problem with the spray nozzle or dispensing button. But the scent of the insecticide was a problem. The smell of the Raid Ant and Roach Killer is extremely unpleasant. Like most insecticide sprays it smells bad. With the added fragrance the nasty aroma is doubled. Imagine how a person with extreme body odor would smell if they used a cologne to mask the offensive odor. Well that's how bad the Raid Ant and Roach Killer smells! The nasty insecticide odor is obvious and the added fragrance adds an additional unpleasant odor.
Did the Raid Ant and Roach Killer Insecticide work?
The Raid Ant and Roach Killer Insecticide Spray killed the ants that received a direct treatment. But it did nothing to prevent additional ants from visiting the treated areas. There was no residual action. The product didn't continue to kill ants for "up to 4 weeks" as described on the product label. From what I noticed, the effectiveness of the insecticide was nonexistent once it dried. I suppose it's possible the black ants visiting my kitchen are highly evolved and immune to the lingering effects of Raid Ant and Roach Killer. In my case, continued use of the Raid Ant and Roach Killer Insecticide just doesn't make sense because it doesn't work as described. When used as directed the product didn't work for me.
