The Nojo Baby Sling
When my seven year old daughter was a baby, I carried her around in my Nojo Baby Sling constantly for the first three months. She was attached to me most of the day and came out only for diaper changes, baths and feedings. She slept all the time and seemed to really be comfortable and content in the sling. Even after her three month awakening, she still enjoyed getting back into the sling with mommy (and daddy) when we went places. As a result, I considered a Nojo Baby Sling to be a must have for my new baby boy.
What is it? Description, capacity etc
..
The sling is basically a long piece of fabric with a loop type buckle to adjust it for different sized babies and parents. The side rails of it are thickly padded to form a nice barrier and keep baby comfy. There is also considerable padding (think 80s shoulder pads) on the parent shoulder portion. It is worn over the shoulder and can be switched from side to side.
The sling is designed for babies up to thirty pounds and can be worn in different ways as baby grows. In addition to cradling baby in front, it can be adjusted for an older baby so that they can sit on your hip in the sling. It is fully washable and comes in different patterns, although the interesting ones are harder to find sometimes. The Original Sling is available at Babies R Us and other places where you find baby gear. It retails for around thirty dollars.
Using it in our life
..
I love anything that can give me a free hand and a relieved right arm, but found it amazing how two children reacted so differently to this sling! My daughter only liked it in the snugly comfortable position and we stopped using it when she could sit up on her own. It was so great being able to have my hands free while she was securely in the sling. My son was another story in his first three months. I only got him to comfortably ride in the sling one time and only for about twenty minutes. I was pretty disappointed considering how much use I got out of it with my daughter. He just always seemed squished and I ended up having to reach for the Baby Bjorn. I preferred the sling because it was so much easier just to throw over my shoulder and go!
The sling is also supposed to be marvelous for breastfeeding, but I could never adjust it enough so that we were both comfortable trying it for very long. I tried it in several different positions in an effort to be successful, but found it to be physically impossible without having breasts that are a foot long!!!
My son likes the sling as a seat on my hip and it is a nice secure place to set him which still helps me relieve some of the arm fatigue from carrying him around all the time. I like to use the sling at the beach so that I can carry him down to the ocean without my arm feeling like it is falling off.
What about me?
I like it! It is comfortable to wear and does not put strain on my back. I have a bad back form a car accident and still find the sling to be an ideal carrier for me. It easily fits over anything I wear and can be adjusted if needed.
My conclusions
For a reasonable thirty bucks, this is a good carrier. I prefer my Sidekick Diaper Bag right now, but in a pinch this works very well. It is easier to use than a Baby Bjorn and lower profile than a full on baby back pack. It is also great for those times when a stroller will not work. I had better luck with it with my daughter, but she slept all the time and it was a spot she found comfortable. My son almost never sleeps during the day so he doesnt want a place to snuggle into. Despite their differences, it has been a useful baby item for both!
