Cosco Portable Crib - Sleep Like a Baby

Aug 4, 2001 (Updated Jun 14, 2002)
Review by
Rated a Helpful Review

Pros:Easy set up, very sturdy, 50 lbs. weight limit, quality mattress

Cons:Hard to find bedding sets for, no drop side

The Bottom Line: Sturdy construction, quality 2-inch mattress included, folds away easily, secure locking mechanism that baby can't open, higher weight limit than other portable cribs. $20 cheaper than others of less quality.

I had my heart set on the Delta Luv Fold-A-Way crib when heading to the Babies R Us store. When I arrived, I found that they carried 3 different brands. The Cosco crib had a weight limit of 50 lbs., while the other two held up to 35 lbs. I knew the baby I would have visiting was big for her age, so the weight limit was a big deciding factor and swayed me in favor of the Cosco immediately.

Parts included in box:
2 white locking plastic casters
2 white regular plastic casters
1 fold-away white-painted steel bed frame with locking mechanism on folding rails
1-piece support board (approx. 1-in thick) with setup instructions and safety info. printed on it
2-inch thick foam mattress (plastic coated/sealed)

Initial SETUP details (1-person setup):
1) Take all parts out of box
2) Push plastic casters into bottoms of bed legs
3) Stand bed upright on casters
4) Open up bed so folding sides are unfolded
5) Twist locking mechanisms into "LOCKED" position (makes click when fully-locked into place)
6) Fold down 4 metal brackets on bed frame (or move them up to bassinet position then fold them down)
7) Slide mattress support board down into bed and make sure resting firmly/evenly on the 4 metal brackets
8) Put sheets on mattress
9) Slide mattress down into bed on top of support board
10) Ready to use! FAST and SIMPLE setup

STORAGE/breakdown details (only takes 1 person to breakdown):
1) Pull mattress up out of bed
2) Pull support board up and out of bed (using handy pull hole in the board)
3) Depress locking buttons and twist locking device into "UNLOCKED" position
4) Slowly roll/push two non-folding sides together until the other 2 sided fold inward into the middle of bed
5) Slide support board into center of bed rails on the folded sides
6) Slide mattress into center of bed rails next to board
7) Unlock plastic caster wheels
8) Roll away into storage area

Safety Features:
1) Sealed, plastic-covered mattress for easy disinfection & cleanup
2) Heavy-duty support board with safety info., weight limit, setup instructions on board
3) Locking plastic caster wheels
4) Twist-lock sides that CAN'T be depressed by baby (takes quite a bit of effort to depress by adult too). I have to depress recessed locking buttons with eraser end of wooden pencil because you have to push down into the device so far to get it to release. GREAT safety measure for busy/curious little fingers!
5)Snug-fitting mattress which doesn't scoot around at night. Sheets I bought (extra cost) also fit snuggly so wouldn't come loose in the night & tangle baby.

Things I liked about the bed:
1) The support board was thicker than the Evenflo portacrib.

2) The 2-in. thick mattress was better quality than the Delta and the Evenflo crib.

3) Crib was practically ready to use, out of box (took about 10 min to read instructions and setup).

4) Bed deep enough in lowest position to keep 2-ft tall child from climbing out.

5) I knew the baby I would have visiting was big for her age, so the 50-lb. weight limit swayed me in favor of the Cosco because it could be used much longer than other beds with 35-lb limit.

6) Clean appearance, good enough to use in granny's living room or in a sitters house. Would be great as a starter bed for family with very little space for full-sized crib.

7) Durable, white-coated metal frame/rails. Withstands some teething. Easily cleaned with soap and water.

8) Easy mattress cleanup and quick to change sheets.

In all, I ended up spending approx. $120 total for the bed, 4 sheets, 1 padded washable mattress pad, a tie-down terry cloth pad for spitups, and bumper. Wouldn't recommend buying a bumper unless you see it on display in store and it fits well because the one I bought claimed it fit ALL portable beds, but it was about 1 foot too long and had to be wrapped overlap around the rails to get it tied down. Would recommend buying extra sheets while you are in the store because I've had difficulty finding many on the internet and haven't seen them anywhere in stores except at that Babies R Us. (Not at either the Wal-Mart or Kmart in my area). That store only had the basic yellow, white, pink, or blue sheets unless you bought an EXPENSIVE full bedding set which only included 1 sheet!

Our little guest slept like a baby --- so to speak!
