| nursing3's Full Review: Tough Traveler Bronco |
We are the owners of two baby backpacks, a cheap one and this Tough Traveler one. The Tough Traveler one was better on all counts!
It is a very sturdy backpack, with a hip belt, so that not all the weight is on your shoulders. All the belts are adjustable, so that you can custom fit it to your own build. It fits both my husband and myself very well, with a few simple adjustments. I never got the cheap backpack so that I could carry it without pain, and had no problems at all adjusting the Tough Traveler one.
The baby can be strapped in with a safety harness which goes over his shoulders. I think this is very important, since it makes sure that the baby cannot climb out and fall out of the backpack.
What I really like about this backpack too, is that there is room underneath the baby, a kind of mini backpack, in which you can put some diapers, wipes, extra clothes, small toys and a first aid kit. This saves having to drag a diaper bag with you.
Another advantage is that the backpack can be used for toddlers too, not only babies. We have carried our older one in this till he was over 3yo. Of course, it depends on the weight of the toddler, ours always were light, the weight limit for this backpack is 40 lbs.
I always like carrying kids on my back, especially on hikes, but also while shopping. It keeps your hands free for other things or other kids and the baby can look out and because he is high, he can see a lot. A disadvantage is if you have a thrower upper. Our oldest was one of those and we have had a few occasions of him throwing up over himself and over our shoulders and back! Eeeeew!!!
Another disadvantage of carrying kids on your back is the hair pulling, they are in a perfect position to do so :-) Especially younger babies tend to do that a lot. Talking about younger babies, you can start using this backpack when they can sit up by themselves well, usually around 7 to 8 months. It is not recommended to use it for a baby who can't sit well yet.
We have used this backpack for hiking a lot, but I have also used it to be able to do the dishes while still carrying the baby when he was fussy. I use a sling a lot too, but in some cases, it is handier to have the baby on your back instead of in front.
We are using this backpack on our fifth kid now and it is still doing great. We use it less now then we used too, since I use the sling for day to day stuff, but it is nice to have if we have to carry the baby for a longer time, on a day outing or a hike.
If you are looking for a good, sturdy baby back pack, I can very much recommend this one! Compared to the other, cheap one, I have, and to others I have seen, this one is one of the top ones on the market.
