| jeffs320's Full Review: Camp Kulaqua |
I was just browsing around the site to see what I could find to write about, and just happened to stumble upon Camp Kulaqua. I couldn't believe that it was actually listed here, but I could write a book with all the memories I have of that place.
When I was a kid, I used to go to church camp every year, partially because my mom wanted to get me out of her hair for a week, and partially because I knew a counselor couldn't keep an eye on me at all times so I would have more of a chance to goof off. They used to go to some crappy little camps at different places, but the summer I was in 7th grade they started going to Camp Kulaqua, and they have gone there ever since. (Has it really been 10 years?)
There is a fresh water spring that is always freezing cold (perfect for summertime in Florida) with a rope swing, diving boards, and a little beach there. That was always fun, since I love swimming. If you look down to the bottom of the spring, there are caves at the bottom, so now that I am a little older and know how to SCUBA Dive I would love to go back and go diving and check them out.
There is also a river that comes out of the spring where you can go canoeing, and there used to be a treehouse towards the end of the river, but for some reason I am thinking that it was not there the last time I went (in '93)...?? There was also a boardwalk that ran the length of the river to the treehouse, so you could walk there as well...this was the place to smoke cigarettes and act stupid where the counselors couldn't catch you! :)
The last time I went, which was about 6 or 7 years ago, they were in the process of building a gymnasium with basketball courts and everything, so that must be done by now (I would hope!)...
My only problem now is that I was such a hoodlum that I can't really volunteer to go back with the church as a counselor, because they would probably figure they would need someone to watch me, not have me watching kids! (although I have grown up since then...)
