| meli's Full Review: Camp Kulaqua |
I have so many fond memories of Camp Kulaqua. I went there innumerable times as a child and not just for summer camp. One of the benefits of living relatively close I guess. I know I'm not a kid anymore, but if I was I'd be begging my parents to send me here again. Now that I have children old enough to go, I'm thinking of letting them go even though I live a thousand miles away.
Back when I was a kid the cabins were not air-conditioned like they are now. You didn't want the top bunk because it was hotter up there. The typical cabin had about 8 girls and one counselor. And one shower! We made out pretty good though.
One of the best things about Camp Kulaqua is the spring which makes a big swimming hole before going on out to form a river. It provides a fun place to cool off from the Florida heat. Swimming classes are taught all the way from Beginners to Junior Lifeguard. There used to be a big rope that you could swing out over the spring and drop into the water. You can also go canoeing or kayaking. There is also a boardwalk that follows down the river through the woods.
Down river a bit there was a treehouse built on a big tree in the middle of the river. Two ways to get to it: by river on canoe or kayak, or by walking across a rope bridge (not for the fainthearted). Back then, if your cabinmates and you kept your cabin the cleanest all week the prize was getting to spend a night in the treehouse. That was the best!
They have a zoo in the camp which is very interesting. The last year I went there, the zoo burned down. It was a very sad occasion. They have rebuilt it now so children can still enjoy it. There is a rodeo to enjoy too. As I remember it, it's not your typical rodeo. I mean, they don't send kids out to ride bulls or anything. But it is still fun to watch. They keep the kids busy every night.
Some of the other offerings are pretty typical for summer camps I guess. Archery, horseback riding, pottery, etc., there are plenty of things to keep you busy. This is a Seventh-day Adventist camp. You have to go to chapel everyday. And, of course, church is on Saturday. They make it fun though. I remember nights that we hiked out into the woods to an old wagon train. They had what we called the "mosquito bowl" which was an outdoor chapel. Mosquitoes were rampant, but it was still better than being inside!
This camp isn't just for summer. There are other events there throughout the year. Parenting retreats, singles retreats, couple retreats....etc. I went there for 6th grade's "Outdoor Education". It's truly a great place to go no matter what the reason.
My main advice would be to make sure you pack sunscreen and *bug spray*. Don't forget the bug spray!!! It is a great place for kids to go. I know that I will cherish my memories of that place for the rest of my life!
