| daphnethechan's Full Review: Camp Shane |
One late night in spring 2003, we watched MTV about Camp Shane. My 14-year-old son was very much impressed and excited to see "other kids" like himself. So, I inquired via the web...the next day I received a call from Camp Shane regarding a comment I had made on their web. The following week, I received a video and enrollment form. My son and I agreed that 6 weeks would be good enough (time and financially). In May, we went to the Open House with my brother and his two children who were also interested. We were very impressed with the cleanliness, professionalism, counselors who were campers and the owners' enthusiasm. My brother signed up my niece for the last three weeks. I completed the payment for six weeks. So, we followed the instructions and off to camp via the camp bus, my son left on July 11. On July 20, it was visiting day...my son lost 16 pounds!!! We walked right past him. He looked fabulous!! He was very homesick at that point, I convinced him that he was doing great and to keep it up for three more weeks...besides his cousin is coming the following week. During my visit, I asked my son how are you doing this? He said that he is DETERMINED TO LOSE THE WEIGHT. It was like "boot camp" at first, but that was exactly what he needed. He was tired of the camp at around the fifth week; that was from his cousin (she wasn't disciplined at home nor at camp). So, we ended up picking up my son at the fifth week...with the assistance of the counselors and nurses. They said that my son was skinny enough and that one week early was okay because he was the skinniest one there. I kept thinking, my God, how does he look? It was unusual to hear that my son is being considered "skinny" at this point and not the "look how big he is".
His accomplishment was a loss of 35 pounds in five weeks!! He went from 244 to 209 at 6 foot 2 inches! His pants size went from size 44 to 36!! I couldn't believe it!!!
The discipline and determination my son learned was WORTH IT!!!!
When he returned to school (first year of high school), many of the children were surprised at the slender Anthony! He walks with pride and confidence.
I, as his mother, was not strict with his "seconds" nor got him to be as active as he should have been. He realized that activity was what he really, really needed. So now I make sure that he gets a "good sweat" at around 6:30 pm. and to follow the counselors' lecture on nutrition and emotions. He eats his breakfast, lunch and dinner with thought, not with the emotions of "I am bored, so I will eat now".
