| nicolleanngel's Full Review: Camp Shane |
Before arriving to Camp Shane, I was nervous and very uncertain of what to expect. However, the very minute I stepped foot onto the grounds, I was greeted by a man named Simon, who made me, and the several other nervous people I was with feel very comfortable and relaxed. From the first moment I arrived at Camp Shane to the last moment when I stepped out of the gates, I never once doubted that this place was wonderful. It's kind of funny that most of the bad reviews came from people who said they quit, when they actually got let go or thought they were going to some resort when it actually was a camp, who knew!
I was a group leader this summer(2005)and had the absolute time of my life. I am 25 years old and have never met so many wonderful campers and co-workers. There is a reason that so many staff return year after year, and there is even a bigger reason that Camp Shane has so many returning campers: Because this camp teaches you life lessons, one's that you will carry with you whether you return or not!
I had the honor of being surrounded by over 50 girls ages 14 and 15. Sure, there were some things about the camp they disliked, like how much excercise they had to do and how late they could stay out before their curfew was up! If you ask me, if this was all that 14 and 15 year old girls could complain about, then I guess this camp must be doing something right! There were far far many more tears of joy than pain; and the only pain experienced was perhaps muscle aches and having to say good-bye to dear friends at the end of summer.
The activities offered for the campers were amazing. I give a lot of credit to the programming staff and even more credit to the owner and other staff that hired them! Jen, Jamie, and Dustin were three of the most creative and outgoing people and the campers and staff absolutely loved and appreciated them. There was always something for the campers to be involved in. The staff, I think, had just as much fun as the kids.
The two best things about this camp for the campers were making friends and then the weight loss. Sure, kids come to lose the weight, but actually building relationships is the key. Campers learned to feel good about themselves, because they fit in. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see so many girls feel so poorly about themselves, but absolutely thrilling when they made friends and then all of a sudden their self esteem would soar, and I actually believe that most all of my girls left changed and better people. They lost the weight(all of my girls lost weight), but more importantly, they gained friends and happiness.
I cannot wait to come back summer after summer. This camp also made me a better person because of the many talented and different people that opened my eyes to a whole new world. The staff truly care about the campers and each other. The owner and head staff whole-heartedly appreciate life and want kids to come and not only lose weight but appreciate life as well.
The absolute only negative thing I can say about this camp is that it is horrible when you have to say goodbye to the summer and all the wonderful kids and co-workers that make Shane so amazing!
