| fhfoilfencer's Full Review: Camp Shane |
Camp Shane is a place to make memories, develop meaningful friendships, and learn to love and take care of your body. I've been a staff member for two years and I've experienced things at Camp that I've never experienced anywhere else in the world- it truly is a one-of-a-kind place.
The staff members are some of the greatest people I've ever met- they are genuine, caring, fun people who are completely dedicated to the Camp Shane experience.
I personally appreciate camp so much, because how lucky are these kids, who get to spend all summer in a beautiful mountain with lots of land to run around on? This past year the CS staff developed a new Eco Center which is on camp grounds. This is where campers can spend a night camping out with their friends, doing archery, cooking their dinner over a fire, and roasting marshmallows. It's also located on a river with a waterfall that the kids can play in. Ducks, chickens, and geese are raised around the area as well. In my opinion its the best addition to CS yet.
The idea of a "fat camp" is very hushed and unaccepted, but the kids here aren't bullied like they are at home or at school. They're just like any other kids at any other camp: having fun, hanging out with their friends; only they lose weight while they're doing it.The food and diet has greatly improved and the campers seem very happy with it. The staff has been able to cater to vegetarian, lactose intolerant, and kosher lifestyles so if that's a concern of yours, rest easy.
What I think is most important to know about Camp, is that it truly is unique. I can't explain how it feels to see a camper sulk into Camp on day one, unsure and embarassed of oneself. And by the end of their stay, however many weeks, that same camper has confidence and pride, in their body and in who they are. It's the most beautiful feeling in the world, knowing you help make that feeling possible. No child or adult should ever feel ashamed of who they are, and at Camp they learn to appreciate, love, and take care of themselves.
It's here that life begins for some people. To give someone that opportunity, is to give him or her a chance to be happy. I stand by it 110%.
