| humbick's Full Review: Camp Shane |
Yes.. I paid money to go to camp shane. A common term used in camp to desrcibe camp shane was "this is like jail." The summer of 2001 was an absolute flop at Camp Shane, as almost none of my friends enjoyed their summer. First off, the camp gives their children absolutely no freedom. You are stuck onto a tight schedule and have no time to do what you want to do. You may be saying, "well hey, this isn't a resort, this is a summer to lose weight and feel great when you come back".. you may be right, however, there are some camps out there (such as Camp Camelot) which offer fun exciting activities as well as electives and weekly trips, and I averaged the same amount of weight loss. Camp shane does have nice people, however, a big part of your camp experience is to bond with people. Camp shane seems to limit this bondage. The strict policies make you feel as though you are under a law code, and many children (including myself) seemed to be "down" a lot of the time. Although Camp Shane has a lot of territory, the facilities are absolutely terrible. There is only ONE outdoor basketball court that is decent, and the other court should not even be considered one. No indoor courts. Tennis courts are alright, but most other facilities are not good. I think camp shane should consider the ideas of the campers, who are actually living the experience, rather than try to run their own nerve-wrecking "thing". The nutrition classes were informative, but this camp was more working on the "punish people for the bad" and never even gave a glimpse of the "reward for the good". I was happy with the weight loss (15 years old, 35 lbs in 9 weeks), but any summer should be a summer of fun and just because camp shane was unable to combine Weight Loss and Fun, does not mean that other Nutritional/Fitness camps won't be able to as well.
