Pros: Weight loss accomplished easily, counselors were pretty cool
Cons: if you think the camp is too good to be true, you're right
The Bottom Line: This is my opinion: I'm not going back that camp.

| i_sell_society's Full Review: Camp Shane |
I was a counselor for the youngest boys at Camp Shane for 2 months this past year, and believe me it was something that if you have never been inside those gates, you would be totally shocked at both the positive and the negitive aspects of the camp. But lets start with the positives, shall we? First off yes the weight loss aspect was achieved but literally every kid, not as much as others but hey no ones the same and for me it didn't matter. Also I must say I met some of the best and funnest counselors. For the counselors in the lower boys division, we got along pretty well and after cerfew we would come back and hang out on the porch and chill with our group leader. The best thing I could think of out of everything would be how much of reality I learned from it, and I'm just about every other camper and counselor learned it as well.
Of course I have to tell about the down side of Camp Shane, which I'll go by in a simple way. Like all new experiences I start with a clear mind and it starts off with a grade: an A, which is what I'm sure most parents would give after looking at the website. IF THERE'S ONE THING YOU LEARN FROM THIS REVIEW, ITS THIS: THE WEBSITE WILL SEND YOU THE WRONG IMPRESSION. I'll prove this by taking it one part at a time, and I'll copy exactly what the website says and I'll tell what the truth is:
Website: The cabins have tiled floors, paneled walls, modern lighting, and private bathrooms with showers.
Truth: What they don't tell you is that the matresses are uncomfortable, the walls are really old, "modern" lighting are just flourecent tubes, and the showers go cold after about 10 minutes of using the stall, even less when the people next door are showering as well. Not to mention the bathrooms were meant to be used by fewer campers than are supported in the cabins. Plus there is no soap to wash with after using the bathroom, which leads to the many outbreaks of pinkeye. Also there were alot of hornets nests inside and around the cabins.
And so my opinion goes down just a little to an B+
Website: Near camp is the beautiful 9 mile long Swinging Bridge lake.
Truth: if you look at the picture the lake looks within walking distance, right? WRONG! its actually a 20 minute drive to get to the lake. It is nice though.
Down to a B
Website: Hi Tech, too long to write it out, check out the site yourself.
Truth: They didn't have dune buggies running because they never finished the track, so I was told. The computers are slow and they all share a 56K line, which means connections are slow....as.....a snail. Oh and if you're younger than 13 don't expect to do the cool stuff like go carts or paintball.
C
Website: Sports. At camp shane we make you feel comfortable yada yada yada....
Truth: Put yourself in my shoes, you think that my supervisors would let my kids not participate in a sport just because they don't want to? Because most of the time if one kid did not like the sport and sat down, about half would follow him and so us counselors were left with the duty of making sure the kids did not sit. You won't believe how many times I had to hear "I can't play, my leg hurts." In my opinion this was the most stressful aspect of working there.
The grade falls to a D *note: a C means average!*
Website: Pool, check out the website.
Truth: The water hasn't been changed for a long long time. Hope your kid didn't swallow any.
The lifeguards were hot though, so the grade goes up to a C.
Website: special events, read it.
Truth: Hmm where to start with that one. For one, evening activities were EVERY night, which some campers did not like because they would rather socialize with their friends and prolong freetime. But they were never given the opportunity. Patriot Games, College Daze and Color war, let me tell you for alot of kids it was not as fun as they look. It was long, boring, and at the end nothing really showed for it.
Down to a C-
Website: Nutrition
Truth: if you look at the site, it says "hamburgers" but I'm sorry my friend, they lie because its actually turkeyburgers they have and believe me they get old quick. And just for the record dry and hard as a rock toast with a bit of jelly on top is not a fun food, and I'm eating that toast with with like a pound of extra crunchy peanut butter on top Hahahahahahahahah!
I'm just gonna drop the whole grade down to a D-
And lastly just to inform all you parents out there, camp shane is like Showgirls mixed with a little bit of Freddy got Fingered. There was just so much sexualness that my kids, who were under the ages of 10, got into it. And I won't even go on about the older boys.
So to conclude, camp shane does its job in showing that it is a weight loss camp, but please, do your homework and find out how it really is. I worked there, I experienced it, as did about 120 other counselors. I am not saying that it is a bad camp, some people like it while other do not quite like it while other totally hate it.But my opinion is somewhat on the downside though because I, like about 95% of the other counselors this year, would not return. I can't say I hated camp, because I didn't. But besides the company, the lifeguards, and the pizza bagels, there's really not much else positive that I can say.
