| sailtockwogh's Full Review: Camp Tockwogh |
Before going full tilt into this review, I want to let the readers know that I wrote this to show people what a great environment Tockwogh fosters with both its wonderfully dedicated staff and its numerous activities. For the last two summers I have worked for YMCA Camp Tockwogh, and I can think of no better place to spend my summer. There is something about it that is simply magical. The people you meet and the growth you undergo in two weeks is amazing. I used to joke these past summers that sessions passed like months, but that is because every two weeks at camp provides an amount of experiences it would take a month to equal anywhere else. I think the reason that I have met so many great people at camp is because we are all there for the same basic reason, we want to help and teach kids. It is such a great environment to be in when there are 140 staff members, most of whom are in college or just out of high school, who want nothing more than to be with kids and help them become better people.
Every year I return a better counselor and a better person, building on the lessons I learned before. Also, every year it seems that something exciting and new is going to happen. This year it will be the First Annual YMCA Camp Tockwogh Regatta, to be held on July 14th, 2004. The camp grows and changes every year along with its staff and campers. I cannot think of a better job because the way I look at it they are paying me to be a kid, I couldn't get a better deal.
While Tockwogh has a lot of great activities and special events for the campers, safety is truly our greatest concern, especially with the huge waterfront we have. Every counselor is at least trained in First Aid and CPR. The majority of the staff are actually certified lifeguards, including all of the waterfront staff. And, speaking of the waterfront, all of the instructors have either Maryland Safe Boater's License or a U.S. Coast Guard license.
I have spent a good portion of this review discussing
our waterfront. However, I am a little biased because it is the reason that I kept coming back to Tockwogh as a camper, and it is one of the reasons I will return again this year. Not to worry for the land lovers, there are plenty of land activities for those campers who are not water fanatics to the degree I am. For sports we have soccer, lacrosse, tennis, and basketball. There are also some great outdoor activities like our challenge course with a climbing wall and a zip line or our nature hikes. If you don't want to be that active all day we offer classes in arts and crafts, photography, and creative writing. There is really something for everyone at Tockwogh.
