To anyone thinking about sending a child to Gwynn Valley Camp -
There are so many beautiful camps available where children can learn sports, camping skills, horseback riding, etc. Choosing the right one for your child can be a daunting experience. As a pediatrician with four children, I felt the same way when I began looking for the right summer camp. My children work hard in school all year and deal with competition for grades, sports, etc. I wanted a place that would be nurturing and teach them not only typical camping skills but also tolerance, compassion, empathy, teamwork and concern for others. Gwynn Valley presents unique opportunities for interaction with children and counselors from many different countries. The emphasis in on learning to appreciate others as well as the natural beauty of the surroundings. The directors, Grant and Anne Bullard, have years of experience and are hands-on involved not only in carefully choosing the counselors and staff but also in the daily life at camp. Background checks are done on all staff members each year. Everyone is certified in CPR and well trained in their specialty areas. I have worked as the camp pediatrician for several weeks each of the last six summers, so am well aware of the care which is taken to make the camp session a safe and memorable one for each camper. Many camps have a nurse available and a physician on call nearby, but Gwynn Valley has a physician and two nurses living at the camp all the time. That is an indicator of how conscientious the directors are about providing the best for the campers.
What else? A working farm to give "city kids" the chance to feed calves and play with baby piglets, to pick fresh corn and be surprised at the flavor! Four-day adventures for the older children away from camp where they learn to canoe, rock-climb, hike and mountain-bike. No competition in the process, just cheers from everyone at the progress they make.
I would highly recommend this camp for anyone.
