| estherg's Full Review: Surprise Lake Camp |
I am not the parent of a camper who went to Surprise Lake. Instead, this past summer, I worked at Surprise Lake and can strongly and confidently say that I would never send my child to this camp.
I grew up at a Jewish overnight camp, that was, in description, very similar to Surprise Lake, and my summers at that camp were wonderful, enriching experiences that in many ways changed my life,. I chose to work at Surprise Lake because I thought I could provide kids with the same kind of experiences I had at overnight camp. Unfortunately, because of the administration, it was difficult to provide kids with a meaningful, and positive summer camp experience.
The bottom line is this: The welfare of campers is not Surprise Lake's highest priority. Campers are yelled at, herded, and for the most part, treated like inferior human beings. Many of the staff I worked with this summer, who were wonderful, caring people, had a very hard time watching the way the Administration treated the kids. The kids, as a whole, were never encouraged to respect each other, Judaism, or the beautiful piece of land Surprise Lake is set on.
And finally, I have to mention this: The food is terrible, a nutritional nightmare, and worse than any food I'd ever had: in college, at other overnight camps, anywhere. A regular meal is corn and cheese. "That's all there is?" the kids would ask. "Just corn and cheese?" Absolutely. Surprise Lake couldn't be bothered to spend money on protein. And breakfast, on Saturday mornings, is brownies. That's great if you're 10, but if not...
