| Dani257's Full Review: Wishbone |
I think my dogs are jealous of Wishbone. Who is Wishbone? He's the canine star of a cute, fun, and educational show on PBS.
Wishbone is the dog of Joe, a pre-teen. Joe, along with his friends David and Sam have everyday kid adventures. They range from starting a grocery delivering business to spelling bees. Wishbone narrates each adventure (The viewer hears his thoughts, although his friends don't), and then recalls similar events that happened in books. This is where the education and most of the fun takes place. Wishbone is transported into the story itself, playing one of the characters. Dressed in costumes, he's played Tom Sawyer, Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, and D'artagnan from The Three Musketeers to name a few. The skits pare down the story to the important essentials (The show is only a half hour long), but nothing is lost in the telling. The show doesn't try to simplify the telling of the tales. I think that's good. We do children too much of a disservice sometimes by not providing them a challenge.
This show has everything. The modern day scenes help children relate to the tales in the books. There is also diversity. The kids are different races (David is black) and sexes (Sam is short for Samantha). This also applies to the book portion of the show. Not only do they introduce Shakespeare and Mark Twain, but also Native American tales and African ones as well. Plus, there is great acting. The children do a good job, but kudos must go to the actors in the book scenes. They play many different parts and always put their hearts into it. I wish I could find out more about some of them.
And, we mustn't forget the star of the show. Wishbone, the jack russell terrier. Like the title of my review says, he's one cute pup. Plus he's funny, sensitive and well read. Humans, you've got competition.
