| zobovor's Full Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks |
I'm guessing the origin of the Chipmunks went something like this: One afternoon, a couple of guys were playing with their tape recorder in the basement when they discovered that if you sing very slow and then play it back at high speed, you sound like... well, a chipmunk. They managed to cut an album based on this cute idea. And that's where it should have stopped.
Instead, an entire phenomenon was born, based on this ridiculous little premise. The three "boys" are simply not that lovable, folks. Alvin is constantly getting into trouble with some zany, greedy scheme. Simon is so intellectual it hurts, while Theodore... well, eats. The latter two are supposedly the sane voices of the group, but somehow Alvin always ends up convincing them to partake in one of his ridiculous escapades. And yes, in every episode they destroy some song from pop culture by squealing it several octaves too high.
Later episodes spawned the Chipettes, female clones of the three Chipmunks who are identical in every respect. Now there's six of the little buggers running loose through the streets. Innumerable albums have been released, and at least one feature film that I know of. (The movie is almost watchable, actually, if only because the animation is light-years ahead of the TV series.)
I promise you that these characters' voices will make your ears bleed. Don't allow these miserable rodents into your home.
