| blkfury's Full Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks |
This old cartoon has never been much to my likings, even as a little kid. It's just a really silly cartoon about unrealistic things, with voices that don't necessarily sound like chipmunks; I mean, what do chipmunks sound like, anyway? This cartoon is only played once every weekday on Cartoon Network, and I believe that is still too much.
Alvin and the Chipmunks is a cartoon about three singing chipmunks who live with a younger man named Dave who has no social life. The chipmunks sing old, trendy songs from the early '80's in their chipmunk voices, and aren't really popular, even among the younger crowd. They do have appearances on stage on some occasions, however. You'd think they'd make money, but they live in a pretty ratty house with the loner Dave, so maybe they give their money to charity, who knows.
Alvin is very egotistical, and always tries to become famous and wealthy through downright silly methods. He doesn't really care about the feelings of others, and takes almost any means to better himself socially. He is always trying to take advantage of his brothers, or use them without helping them in return. His ways of doing this are cheap and easily noticable, and his reputation has him as the trouble maker (Can't you just hear Dave yelling Alllllvviiiiin!!!!). Alvin does seem to be delusional at times.
Simon is the smart chipmunk of the group. He tries to be a scientist, but he is really too young to know about anything. He's always falling for Alvin's tricks, so this shows a general lack of common knowledge. He does, however, have a much nicer personality than Alvin, and he tries to think about the consequences of his actions before he does it, but he usually does it anyway after being coaxed by Alvin.
Theodore is the fat one. He is very kind-hearted, however, and, like Simon, thinks about the consequences of his actions before doing them. Yet, also like Simon, he is easily coaxed by Alvin to do things for him, and his tender heart makes him too weak to stand up against him. He admits his problems readily, and doesn't seem to have the self-denial that Alvin does. I think this makes Theodore the best chipmunk of the group. However, he is also the clumsiest of the chipmunks, and he shows it very often.
The storylines to the cartoons are usually pretty cheap ripoffs of common situations that you see on many other cartoons. It's always a problem that Alvin causes, and the trio has to work together to fix it. There really are no "morals to the story," either, and the plots never get too deep to cause much REAL trouble for them to get out of. Alvin always ends up in the end admitting his problem, and saying he's sorry for it, but that's about it. There is no real character growth and development among any of the main characters.
The animation is pretty bad, even for its time. It looks like cheaply drawn pictures laid on generic backgrounds, filmed at a low frame rate, giving it a choppy feel. The sounds also sound pretty bad. The chipmunk songs are cheap remixes of songs that were otherwise pretty good, done in that chipmunk voice that gets oh-so-annoying.
I know cartoons are unrealistic, but three chipmunks living with a young man is beyond unrealistic. Talking animals, I can go with, but this is just plain silly. They're going to grade school, as well, and are the only chipmunks there (unless you count the chipettes, their female counterparts), or any other animals at that. All the other animals in the movie are real, and don't have human characteristics.
This cartoon doesn't have anything good going for it. Bad storylines, no plot, unrealistic, bad animation, bad sound, etc. If it were at least funny, it would have some value, but it's not even that. I give this cartoon two thumbs down... Way down.
