| fixxxerny's Full Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks |
Seeing how I watched Alvin and the Chipmunks when I was younger, and I am nineteen (and still an avid cartoon watch -- can't wait for June Bugs), I find it amazing to see that this show is still on the air. It wasn't that great when it came on to begin with anyway. The misadventures of three personified chipmunks, abandoned on the doorstep of one David Seville, is barely fun the first time around.
Some of the schemes that Alvin attempted to pull off are mildly comical at best. There is the episode where Dave was going to be on TV, so to calm him down, they get him hypnotized to think he is Alvin. He rides around the house and TV set (which was actually his house, since it was one of those people-appreciation shows) on a bicycle, crashing into things and causing a ruckus. Another time, Alvin and Simon used food to convince Theodore to remember American history through the use of food. Silly Theodore forgot that the Bald Eagle is the national bird, not the Stuffed Turkey
Do you see where I am going on this one? This is fourth grade humor at the highest it can be. Honestly, if Cartoon Network comes down to taking either this or something else off of the air, they should dump this one. I would hate to see Alvin and the Chipmunks take the place of a slightly higher quality cartoon show, such as Animaniacs or the high-powered slapstick Freakazoid! (a show that I wish was still in first-run - the humor wasn't lost on me). I think this show as certainly run its' course.
The only thing I can say to the credit of the show is that the entire Chipmunk motif has been persistent. How long ago was the Christmas song released? I think that song is easily older than I am. It shows the staying power of the Alvin and the Chipmunks empire. Thankfully, even the strongest dynasties crumble.
