Dexter's Laboratory is a great cartoon that airs on the Cartoon Network. The show stars Dexter, a little boy genius who has a huge secret laboratory hidden inside and underneath his house. In his laboratory he has countless super-computers, robots and various other mechanical inventions, including a time machine. (like I said, the boy is a genius!) Dexter has an older sister named Deedee who loves dancing, cookies and pestering Dexter at the most inopportune times. Add to that their constantly-cleaning mother and funny-but-clueless father and you have the makings of a humorous cartoon show!
The cartoon is funny and cute, with humor even us "big kids" can enjoy! Dexter is constantly trying to keep his sister from ruining his inventions, while at the same time keeping his "secret laboratory" a secret from his parents. He also has to face his nemesis, Mandark, from time to time. Dexter can't stand the idea that another person might be smarter than him, although Mandark has a weakness in his crush on Deedee which makes for some hilarious episodes. The violence level in this program is pretty low but Dexter does call his sister "stupid" and "dumb" quite often. (although I don't know of many siblings who don't call names from time to time in reality, either!)
Educationally, I feel this show can encourage a child to do their best in school so they can be "super-smart" like Dexter. It also shows science in a positive light which can't be all bad, either. My whole family enjoys watching Dexter's Laboratory together and then talking about it afterwards. Even our 2 year old loves to watch Dexter's Laboratory and laughs during the funny parts, too!
