In the past few years childrens' programs have been lacking inspiration and emotion. It was always the same old thing main character has a problem goes through some trouble then solves it coincidentially. I stopped watching cartoons after I realized that they were going nowhere. I had heard about Cartoon Network and Dexter's Laboratory but never watched because my cable didn't get that channel. But, every two years or so the cable company switches around our channels and adds a few more so I finally got the channel. Well, I didn't think much about DL because it looked like just another failed attempt at appeal towards kids. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Genndy Tartakovsky (hard name to pronounce I know) probably realized this lack of originality in cartoons and just said,"Well, lets make a character that doesn't have to solve every problem." Thus, Dexter and Deedee were born, er, drawn. So, Dexter has an enormous IQ and discovers a gigantic room hidden behind his bookcase. Coincidentially enough it doesn't show when you observe the exterior of his house and his parents don't know about it. So, using his superior knowledge, he decides to use it as a lab and build machines that surpass those of modern science. But, his incredibly stupid sister stumbles upon his secret lab and enters it every chance she gets to "play". Destroying everything she finds interesting Deedee makes Dexter's life a living hell. This seemingly simple subplot is just a background for Genndy and her teams ingenious plans.
This show is absolutely hilarious. Even the most mature of people will split their sides at Dad's random comments and Dial M for Monkey mini plots that pop up every episode. I really enjoy the clever little gags Genndy concocts like an entire episode with only two lines of dialog where Dexter goes through a giant heap of trouble to repair a burned light bulb. Or the one where Dexter creates a belt that can make him do things backwards and we see him drinking his milk and scarfing down a sandwitch in reverse. Although this show is intended for kids there are several episodes in which we unfortunately get the opportunity to see Dexter's exposed rear. Unpleasant in the least. And corny lines and situations do appear every now and then but it doesn't disrupt the show. I highly recommend this show to anyone who wants to see something different Saturday morning.
