Pros: Issues and themes are portrayed with respect.
Cons: Too many repeats of the same episodes. The show is no longer being produced and they tend to run the same episodes over and over again.

| mkosak's Full Review: Torkelsons, The |
If you want to enjoy some quality family television, break out the popcorn, snuggle up with your kids, and watch The Torkelsons.
Not everyone feels the same way about this show (my husband absolutely HATES it!), but everyone's entitled to their own opinion (he's wrong/I'm right). I must admit that the show is kind of sugary sweet and the family is not exactly "mainstream" and this is why some people may not find the show "believable."
I remember when this show first aired on network TV as 'Home Again.' The plot of the series centers around a single mom of 5 living in Oklahoma. The two primary characters in the show are the mom, Millicent Torkelson, and her oldest daughter, Dorothy Jane.
I don't know why it happened, but after a season or two the show was revamped and the family went from five kids to three. Soon thereafter the family moved to Seattle to live with a single dad and his (spoiled) teenage son and daughter--Hence, the Torkelsons series was born!
I admit that I do like the chemistry between the cast in the revamped show over that of the original, but I've always wondered what ever happened to Millicent Torkelson's other two kids. (If anyone knows, e-mail me)
The thing I like most about the show is the strong, caring relationship between Dorothy Jane and her mom. They get into disagreements, but the love the family has for each other always pulls them together and they get through things. The show contains the comedy and drama of everyday life. Issues are dealt with in a respectful, caring manner.
An example of this is after Millicent's divorce, Dorothy Jane, wants her mother to start dating. Dorothy Jane sees her mother as a beautiful woman with a lot to give. Dorothy Jane invites their pastor over for Thanksgiving dinner. Millicent doesn't see herself the same way, and her insecurities about herself come through. To make a long story short, at the end of the show Millicent is able to make Dorothy Jane understand that when she's ready to date, she will; and Dorothy Jane is able to make her mom see that she is still a very attractive woman with much to give.
So with all this in mind, make a date with your kids to watch The Torkelsons. There's no sex, drugs or violence to worry about; just plain old fashioned values and love.
